Well, I'm starting to finally get annoyed with my Native's blade. Compared to the use previous EDC knives have seen, I don't even use this blade. The worst it typically sees is trimming fingernails, threads and opening packages (as compared to cutting ropes and hoses, prying, and use as a screwdriver).

Anyways, the very tip of the edge, just south of the actual point, just keeps chipping. I couldn't even guess as to why, and I really don't think my fingernails are that tough. I've resharpened it once, on DMT fine. Touched it up when it wasn't hair splitting sharp on the DMT x-fine. But I just can't keep it from chipping. I'm vary worried about taking this knife into the field with me now, especially if I end up working on a USFS fire crew (which is my plan this summer).

I know others have had this problem, although it seems more limited to earlier runs. Just bought this knife in Jan of this year! Is there something I'm doing wrong here? Maybe just obtusing the angle near the tip more will solve this I don't know, but I just don't understand why it would be chipping with such light use!

It took about 5-6 sharpenings before the chipping went away on my Native. For some the chipping never goes away. I would contact Spyderco W&R if it doesn't sharpen out.

I personally would call Spyderco and send it in asap. I don't have the patience to sharpen the hell out of a knife to see if it's okay.

I have the patience and don't mind sharpening it a few times, I just won't be able to with this in the field too effectively as my field kit is a simple washita pocket stone with some compound rubbed into the leather pouch to act as a strop. Great on carbon blades for touching up, but not aggressive enough for S30V (at least nowhere near my DMT stones)...

You might want to get your hands on a Native III with VG-10 steel. That is my all around favorite Spyderco. No issues with blade chipping and still shaving sharp.

I just bought another one (Native) and mine chipped about 1/2" from the pivot end of blade. It took two(2) sharpenings to get it to stop. Now it's doing fine! Give it another 2 or 3 sharpenings and see how it does. I think this steel is ok, just that the edges get too hot on heat treat or get burned sharpening on the belts at Spyderco.
