I have always been a loyal benchmade knife fan, i have had all different models from the griptilian in 440c to my newest edition a rukus in S30V. Most of my knives have always used 154cm and i did not think there was anything better. Until i got the rukus model 610 in S30v i was a bit skeptical at first thinking that it would not be any stronger are have better edge retention than 154cm. Oh but it does, i have cut a goodyear allterain tire in 4 pieces. and could still pop hair off my arms after i was finished.

Does anyone else feel the same way?

I've been highly impressed by the S30V in my Mini-Rukus. Sharpens easier than ATS-34 and VG-10, seems to hold an edge longer.

I have used a few Benchmades with 154cm and S30V and suspect S30V is superior.

But, how superior is an incremental issue IMO.

Note that the RUKUS has a good edge geometry from the factory, which helps the performance IMO.

That is good performance, that cutting of the tires. Last time I did the tire cutting thing, the steel in the bead area dulled my blades but quick. (must be technique)

I'm not sure that I think S30V is easier to sharpen then VG-10, but it holds longer for sure.

i have a ritter griptilian that seems to chip out a bit too much. i don't know if it was just a botched heat treat or if it's just too brittle for hard use. seems odd to say that, but it could be plausable. although, the worst chip out happend when i cut a no hub band off a three inch cast iron pipe???

I love S30V but that chipping issue just keeps me buying Spyderco's S30V only, I haven't got a problem with it and haven't they have any chipping problem.

My experience with 154cm vs s30v is that s30v holds and edge longer and get a finer edge but I trust 154cm for hard cutting tasks more than s30v.

yeah, i think i'm going to buy a new griptilian since they put 154cm on it. that ritter giptilian was from the first year aeromedix offered them and it could be that they just had some bugs to work out with their s30v. either way i don't think i will be buying another benchmade with s30v. it's just too much money to spend to have to watch my blade get smaller every time it chips.

S30V is superior IMO. BM seems to heat treat their 154CM too soft anyway.

The smaller carbides of the S30V is better for the overall knife performance than the coarse carbides of the 154CM.

Of these two, S30V performs best imo.

I love S30V, I love my Kershaw Spec Bump, I've used and abused it, more so then many. I sell knives, and I want to make sure I know what I'm selling by putting many brands to true test. I also own cabins with the inlaws, cabins we have been renovating for the last six years, some being tore down to the ground just to be built again. I think S30V is easier to sharpen then 154CM (or why not ATS34, pretty much the same thing, right?), heck for the most part easier then most other steels, retains an edge longer, I'm not sure about that. Many may not like this, but I've become a fan of Sandvik 13c26.

Out of the two, if both were heat treated perfectly, S30V is better as a knife. 154CM is better for the maker -as it is easier to machine, grind, finish, etc.

In use, only a person who uses knives alot would know the difference.
