S30v

Jerry,

Deal:D but please email me the secret now, lol i want to have this knife done for the Guild show:P
Will buy you 2 beers!

I heat treated it myself with temps given to me by Kit Carson.

I do have a piece of RWL43 but seems is very hard to get from Michael Walker, and precision ground would be nice.

I use a loose buff at 1800 rpm with 600 grit greaseless compound (Jantz Supply), run the length of the blade, after getting most all the scratches out on the grinder. Works like a charm. They also have an 800 grit compound, but I've not used it.

I'm expecting lots of beer here, folks... :)

Tim, what I got from Wolf Borger was precision ground, but the shipping charges were kind of high.

The reason I asked about heat treat is that S30V (like 3V) demands a very rapid quench. I think Kit uses quench plates. If you don't quench it fast enough, it doesn't get full hard, and that sounds like it might be part of what you're experiencing. It should have eaten those 220 belts, especially if they were a little worn. Paul Bos does mine. He uses 1975F to harden, then cryo, followed by double tempers at 600F. Since I don't do flat grinds, everything I've said here may not apply to a platen. I'll still take those beers from you though! :)

Well guys, I must have just slopped into the right combination of belts and speed because these s30v blades were as easy to finish after heat treat as any other steel I've used and were easier than some!
I use Carbo Schroeder aluminum oxide belts from 60 grit on. I tried the aluminum oxide belts Sheffield's sells and just couldn't get them to work at all, might have been the steel or the speeds I was running them at.
I took the blades thru 320 grit before heat treat and cleaned em up with 320 grit afterwards and went right to my fine scotchbrite belt, a well used one I might add, and the blades finished out real nice. I run the scotchbrite belts and the belts finer than 220 grit as slow as my grinder will run.
Next s30v blades I grind I'm going to take them thru 500 or 600 grit prior to heat treat and see if I can go right to the scotchbrite belt after heat treat.
