s30v is an awesome steel ... i just tried to sharpen my first anf only s30v knife which is a spyderco sage... and it was really easy to get a razor edge on it....
i used a gatco dmt edgemate ... i am from germany so sorry for my english

good stuff indeed. s30v is probably my favorite stainless steel. i'd say 1095 is my favorite carbon steel.

Good for you. I must have more S30V steel blades than any other. It's a great steel. You're English is quite good, no worries.

Congratulations of sharpening and the great knife. I love the Sage 1, it's one of my favorite carbon fiber scale knives.

Plus 1 to everything there. :D

thanks to you guys i learned so much here on the forum.. im still a student and this forum is a really cool place to learn (when i joined the forum i was told that s30v would be the best steel in edgeholding thats why i started this thread ....i know now theres s90v and stuff but s30v is cool still...)
cheers guys..

yep agree on s30v. its also for me a yardstick steel that i use for comparing steels edge holding and ease of sharpening. any knife in s30v has at least that going for it imo regardless of the style of the blade or knife features and designs. there are many nice steels now as we live in a time with many choices. I think it remains that s30v is the only steel designed from the start as a high end knife steel. few steels can outperform s30v at a given price point. and ill hold that some are close but most have failings in breaking chipping or corrosion compared to what i consider one of the more rugged steels in s30v and that includes corrosion resistance.

Hey, I think 440C, AUS-8 and 420HC are cool as well. That said, I think that S30V is the modern equivalent of 440C. There are harder steels, tougher steels and more wear resistant steels, but S30V just seems to integrate all these features into one fine compromise.

I haven't had much luck with it so far. I got a Ritter minigrip that chipped on me a couple times and didn't seem to take or hold an edge as well as some of my other knives, even my 440c knives. I think I might've had a bad heat treat on this one.

After the 2nd chip, I sent the knife back to Benchmade & they replaced the blade under warranty (BENCHMADE TREATED ME RIGHT!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE COMPANY.)

Anyway, I just got it back a couple of days ago. I'll have to see how I like the steel this time around.

I EDC S30V most of the time (Military) and I believe it makes a really nice all around steel at proper hardness, Spyderco really knows how to do S30V.

Sometimes I get a little irritated at S30V when working on my water-stone, but lately I've just been doing microbevels and it's given me a whole new love for it when the edge goes on so quick and lasts so long.

S30V holds an edge in a strange, but nice way too. That hair-popping, tree-topping edge disappears rather quickly, but you wouldn't know it from the way the blade keeps cutting other material. Sometimes I'll go a couple of weeks and cutting tasks thinking, "Yeah, this thing is razor sharp," and put it to my arm only to find that it won't shave anymore, yet it still feels super sharp whenever I actually cut anything with it.

my experience with s30 mirrors ankerson. a real decent workhorse stainless that is easily affordable. for me i call s30 the 1095 of s.s. steels. not a super steel but for most everyday usage certainly fills the bill. at present many atomic alloys are coming thru the gates together, but most of us do'nt dissapear into alaskan wilds for 5 months at a time w/o honing aids. these newer alloys are fun to play with & i have many of them but well heattreated 1095 & s30 will certainly suffice.--dennis

i agree. i own a decent selection of steels and i happen to enjoy what some people consider low and mid range steels. high alloy super steels are great for holding an edge for long cutting sessions, but a properly heat treated steel (like S30V) can give me about the same performance if i spend 30 seconds midway through the session to touch up the edge.

P.S. I consider S30V a high-end steel.

Dein English ist besser als meiner Deutsch. I only took four years of it in high school and it is slipping so I can bet i probably messed up a little in what i said.

Back on Topic.
And I agree with you on the s30v all of my EDCs except my bm 710, brkt bravo necker, and saks use that steel. It takes a great edge and holds it.

I have yet to sharpen my Buck Vantage Pro (s30v) Been an EDC for a couple months now.
Still like new. For $60 are you kidding me !

Had heard good things about their heat treat - believe it.

Another S30V over here. I also EDC a Military in that steel in the winter or any days that require a jactet. Sit in my right front pocket under the button down flap. I just got a S35VN Sebenza but haven't got any cutting time on it yet.

Esee - Rowan 1095 steel is my favorite carbon steel too. :D
