I was thinking of using S35VN for a slip joint and was wondering what the heat treat recipe would be for the back spring. Or I could use CPM 154 for the back spring and S35VN for the blade. Thanks in advance.

Dunno what to tell you other than that I shoot for around 48-50 RC for most of my springs, regardless of steel type. You'll likely just have to extrapolate tempering temp from a chart and test it. Situations like this is where a hardness tester comes in useful, i.e. using steels not traditionally associated with a specific method.

I'd err on the side of caution in this case if you don't have a tester, and maybe shoot for 45 RC. If you leave it too hard, you'll have a higher likeliness of breakage at some indeterminate point in the future.

Thanks. I think I will use CPM 154 for the springs and try S35VN for the blades. What is a good recipe for CPM 154 back springs without using cryo or dry ice/denatured alcohol?

I did the heat treat @ 1950F and the temper @ 1140F. Hopefully it turned out OK.

Sounds like it will be fine...
I believe it's relative to where your spring pivot is..

Once you get one done. You will get the feel as to where to put the spring pivot hole.
To close it will be a nail breaker, to far and it will be a weak close up.
