S35VN for Fighting Hawk

Oh I'm for sure not saying it's the best option. Just that I'd be surprised if it broke even under that hard of use.

You haven’t seen me throw. Lol! One way or the other, once I receive the Toor Tomahawk, I’ll try it out just to see what she’s capable of. If I manage to break the scales, I’ll make new ones. Really appreciate all the input and I’m honored to have joined the forum. Thank you !

Great to have you.

100%.

Seems like it would be a simple matter to cut one out of a sheet of 1/4" and go all stock removal. Through hardened at 56-57 I imagine will produce a tough stainless hawk.

I had assumed traditional 'hawk/axe head, not modern flat-tactical.
Certainly David is correct. 1/4" stock removal would be the way. (don't give me ideas!)

Why even think about this steel - when Magna cut is now out ?

Primary attribute for a hawk would seem to be toughness, rather than abrasive wear resistance. MagnaCut doesn't even come close to AEB-L for toughness, according to the designer's own information. That being said, if someone doesn't want the best toughness available in a stainless steel for their hawk, but for whatever reason wants abrasive wear resistance akin to a knife blade, and doesn't mind paying significantly more money, then sure, use MagnaCut. It's a great steel, and tough enough for a hard use knife. But I would never give it as fine an edge as I would a hawk in AEB-L or LC200N. If I wanted corrosion resistance, and wear resistance better than AEB-L, and was willing to pay the extra cost for MagnaCut, I still wouldn't. I would use LC200N instead for its vastly superior toughness over MagnaCut, and its enormously better corrosion resistance than AEB-L (though only marginally better than MagnaCut). It also has better wear resistance than AEB-L but maybe a level or two below MagnaCut. Again, I wouldn't be looking for abrasive wear resistance in a hawk.

ETA: Oh I thought you meant AEB-L, but actually if you meant why think about S35VN for a hawk when you could have MagnaCut, I agree completely.

Yeah, all that in both cases.
You want MagnaCut, buy a new Spyderco Native-5 Salt, or contact a custom maker for a knife-knife. But axe? nope.

I have a stick of it inventory myself, haven't decided what to patterns to start with, but choppers ain't on the list.
