Just starting to mess around with this steel. I'm having a tough time figuring out the sweet spot for it. For example, I know I can take VG10 or 8cr13 to a high polish and have it perform well, whereas D2 seems to perform best with a toothy finish. Based on my limited knowledge this is due to the size of the carbides in the matrix. Which end of the spectrum is S35 on?

I'm using a Smiths tri hone (Aluminum oxide stones I believe). I have a DMT F/EF being delivered tomorrow. I can get it to rough shave arm/leg hair and slice printer paper cleanly but cannot push cut paper or pop hair (something I can do with VG10 fairly easily). I have a feeling my current stones are just cutting so slowly that I'm getting fatigued and sloppy. Opinions?
