So I made a small fix blade for a friend at work out of s35vn and got it to shaving sharp but it seemed a little grabby when slicing magazine paper. It's my first knife in s35vn and only my 4th total.

I took it to a 2x4 and widdled through it, then started whaling away on the 2x4 to see how the edge held up.

After doing this, I checked the paper again and it came out sharper than before. Could it simply be that I wasn't knocking off the burr?

Sounds like that was likely the issue.

You need to buff or strop the edge to remove the wire. After that, I usually give it five or six slices down a piece of heavy cardstock ( postcard thickness) to make sure it is all gone.
