The way I look at steel is there is a reason for all alloys. We get to pick and choose what we want and how it’s used. We really do live in a great time for steel.
If I understand correctly, what makes S5 extremely unique is the silicon (off the top of my head I am not aware of any other steel available in the US in plate/sheet/flat form with 2% silicon). Again if I understand correctly, the great thing about silicon is its effect of making the steel "immune" to high-temp tempering embrittlement. https://knifesteelnerds.com/2018/10/22/silicon-additions-for-improving-steel-toughness/
Any updates on this ? Back in 2011 I believe it was I tracked down a bar of S5 steel for Scott Gossman for a 8 or 10 inch big boar tucker but the heat treat failed so me made me a Polaris model in S7...so I'm interested in seeing what S5 is capable of !...
