S7 Heat Treat problem

Go thin on the edge. All of mine have been 0.005" or even thinner. 10-15 dps depending on the application. 3months with one strop on my edc. I tried to cut stainless foil with it, and dulled the edge. With different geometry, it would probably be fine. I'm really liking this steel. I avoided air hardening steels for the longest time, but not anymore.
 
Why did you avoid air hardening if you're not forging?
 
I was under the impression that the grain was much larger in air hardening steels, preventing the fine edge we get with the simple carbon steels.

I do some forging, but not a lot. I have peripheral neuropathy that prevents proper forging sessions.

Oh. I meant, forging would be the only reason I wouldn't want to use air hardening. That and hamon.
 
The hamon is the biggest deterrent in terms of air hardening steels. That said, 3v and z-wear are pretty incredible performers. Fine grain, great edge stability, exceptional edge holding. Definitely in a league of their own.
 
There are other steels besides 3V? :cool:
 
There's 10V. It has to be at least 3 times better than 3V right? :D

I would like to get my hands on a stick of 15V but I've never seen it for sale at any of the normal places.

I have a knife in 10V and LOVE it. But it is brittle and needs to be used appropriately, don't be scared of it just don't use it as a screw driver or prybar.

I'm planning on getting some thin 10V to make some filet knives out of to try out. Most of the people I know that hunt big game love the short filet knives for game processing.
 
That might skeer me a bit :eek: Depending how thin you mean.
