Sacrilege , Impure , adulterated sacrilege .

I'm not yet ready to drink single malts though and will plan on starting with the more pedestrian Johnny Walker. I know that there are four different labels--red, black, blue, and green. Can someone explain the differences to me?

Actually, Johnny Walker has 6 labels, although Swing and Gold Label are somewhat unknown. I am not an expert on this by any means, but as far as I know...

From least to most expensive:

Red Label: Blended grain and malt whisky, no age given

Black Label: Blend of close to 40 whiskies, all at least 12 years old.

Swing: Very rare in the US, precurser to Gold and Blue labels

Green Label: Blend of 15 single malts, all at least 15 years old.

Gold Label: Similar to green label, but 18 years old.

Blue Label: Blended whisky, no age given but believed to be 50-60 years old.

Anyone else thirsty? Too bad its only 7:30AM and I'm at work.

It may be heresy to say this, but the Japanese Suntory 15-year old single malt is a mighty fine sippin' whisky. And Johnnie Walker Gold is, I think, a much better blended scotch than the Blue that is three times the price.

Actually I don,t know if blasphemy is worse so I,ll let it go this time .
Heck I thought there was only black and red label so I am culpable myself .
Those other Walker offerings sound tempting and may be the best response to the thread yet .( Thanks guys ) Just why would they blend aged SCotch ? I hope that it is a fine hand at work and not just to economise . I can see a pub night is in order soon . The hardest part will be staying detached enough while I imbibe several ounces of Scottish heaven . I am afraid that objectivity goes out the window(along with the car keys) when five or six ounces are consumed .

I,ll keep the Japanese Suntory in mind .

Guys, it's stuff like the "Six Labels of Johnny" and the tea that tastes like scotch that keeps me coming back to the Cantina. "Good stuff and Thanks"

I had been drinking Johnnie Walker Black for many years before I even knew there was a Gold or Blue label. The Green label is a recent addition to the line and has a bit stronger flavor than either the Black or Gold. (For comparison, Chicago area prices are $20 for Red, $30 for Black, $50 for Green, $60 for Gold, $170 for Blue.)

Here's one more to consider: there's a nice 8-year old single malt called "Old Sheep Dip" that's not too expensive and is worth twice the price of the bottle for the look on your friend's face when you pull the bottle out to pour him a sample!

Cheers!

If you can find it, another Scotch worth trying is Glenmorangie, as always (IMHO) served neat.

The Glenlivet 12 is my favorite, I actually like better than the 18. The MacCallen 12 is quite good as well. If your guys haven't tried Knob Creek yet, it is worth a try.

Old Sheep Dip ? That one gave me a good chuckle . What ? Don,t they like selling their Scotch ? I,ll have to try and scare that one up .

IMHO, the Glenlivet 12 is better than the 18, the Macallan 12 is better than the 15 or 18. But you should try the Macallan 30 one time when you're feeling rich or celebratory...it's nectar of the gods, for sure!

Don't drink and play with khukris :D

One of the greatest pieces of advise ever given here! I almost found that out the hard way. Sharp things and booze never mix well; unlike booze with orange juice.

Right up there with "don't fry bacon naked".

Well Munk, I havent separated from my partner this year or watched cancer eat my father alive.

It would be nice to say such things in my life dont make me more cantankarous on occasions, but it wouldnt be true.:o

& I guess at the age of 42 I am still a developing growing human bieng.

Slowly maturing like a good whysky.:D

You also used to do a good wind up on occasions perhaps? & enjoyed an argument as well? Maybe thats why you miss my harsher side? But we are all but mere mortals.;)

Kukri rum can come in the kukri shaped bottle, theres 2 grades of it, Ill look out an article on it, I picked up out there.

Spiral

That's right, Spiral. I never stop learning or trying to do just a little better. ( and I still can fall face first) I'm sorry to hear about your father, and for your loss.
You are making it, and I'm glad you are back.

I'll have you know I don't drink wine coolers, I drink Zima :barf: Is that even still made?

I generally just drink beer. A whole lot of beer. Although a nice tequila is good every once in a while. I've been told that scotch is an acquired taste, but I've never acquired it.

If you like Tequila, El Jimador is nice. IMO Jose Cuervo is good for cleaning paintbrushes and not much else.

I'd have to be feeling pretty rich to buy a bottle of scotch that costs $800. How did you come to try it? Did you splurge and buy a bottle?

Not sure I could ever justify paying that much for something I would end up consuming.

Knob Creek = , although I personally classify this as bourbon. Bit pricey to be drinking all the time though.

Suntory? I believe that that's the very stuff that I tried in a canned form at the mall in Sasebo (from the vending machine) on a dare: if I could slam it, the audience would purchase something else for me to wash it down with. I can best describe the taste as "distilled hatred." I still have a few photos of my (successful) struggle with it afterwards. If I ever get my desktop running again I'll scan and post them. It was quite funny after I recovered. I will not get into the awamori (of the habu variety, to be specific) as that was not funny. Not funny at all.

Dave, Thank you for being the voice of reason and moderation on the forum. ;)

I don't recall ever being accused of that before. First time for everything, I suppose.
