This is not a flame, but feedback from my self and my customers.
I am a huge spyderco fan, do not mis understand this post. I want to be able to better the product and the company.
Sal, spyderco, somebody please hear my cry and hopefully this can be fixed.
>FYI: I manage a cutlery store in San Antonio, Tx
We recieved our shipments of spyderflys from the our SHOT order. In general I am less than pleased. I deal with and personnaly collect bali's of all sorts. When My best customer heard spyderco was releasing bali's again he pre ordered all of them. Well he has 2 of them, the Szabo and B02 (metal handle small fly) I can not in good conscience let him walk out the door with the G-10 handle. Mind you in doing so I am turning down a sure $300 sale!!
>Note: I am a spyderco fan, My edc is the caly 3 with cf and the clad blade, I also own the m4 mule, wht micarta goddard, blk lum chinese folder, blk Lum tanto, just to name my favorites.
The problem!
1. Upon inspection, the handles have way to much play in them, I tighten them ever so slightly and they are locked down. So there is No room for a nice snug smooth feel, it feels like a cheapy china (cc) when you manipulate it. Also causing the blade to rub on the liners.
2. There are gaps between the g-10 and the liners, not par for a spyderco
3. The liners are all the same, but not (if that make sense) as you inspect the liners there are the same as in that all four are cut with the same template, all four have the screw holes for the latch. BUT
they are different some are polished more than others, and the outside grinds are ruff on some, and there is no flush sanding with the g-10 and or the spacer, meaning the grinds on the liners go in and out of being higher and lower than the rest of the handle materials (side view).
4. the spring, it's just there staring at you flopping around, not tight thus causeing the latch to flop around.
5. The handles are boxy and squared off no polished feel, very mechanical
Well these are all minor things to some, they are major flaws for a $300 ($289+ tax) collectors item from SPYDERCO. and the blade is only 154cm?
The B02 mim smallfly is almost $50 less
The Benchmade Morpho (32) has Jeweled titanium liners, polished and sculpted g-10 handles, integrated latch spring (it's part of the knife), D2 blade, smooth action, and a sheath all selling for $50+ less.
All the mentioned Benchmade specs are the type inovations I've come to expect from spyderco, but this seemed to be a lack luster attenpt to produce a knife that would be fine if it were selling for half the price.
I love spyderco, I hope this was an oversight, or new production issues. Please take this as constuctive critisism and not an attack on the company.
