Put it up against a patrol machete... NAO!![]()

machetes generally will outchop a knife. Every machete i own chop better than any knife 10" and under i own. I do have some goloks that do better, though.
Alright you apes, I went ahead and ordered myself a Bear effin' Grylls Parang because of this thread. It should be here on Wednesday.
I can't believe I payed money for something with Bear Gryll's name on it. Something from Gerber no less.
I just typically prefer longer, broader, thinner choppers.

I can't believe I payed money for something with Bear Gryll's name on it. Something from Gerber no less. I'm blaming all of you for this horrifying turn of events. The next thing you know, I'll be running full speed down mountains to avoid pursuing bears and jumping off of cliffs into shallow water and squeezing elephant crap into my mouth to quench my thirst. I just hope I don't get stung by a bee.
Bet it wont outchop a convexed Potbelly....
What I take away from this is this...Nothing bad against the Machax, since there is no one knife that does EVERYTHING better. I'm more surprised that good things are being said about a Gerber Bear Grylls product. Interesting contest, given the blade shapes.
....I've also got an Aranyik hunting knife coming, which is basically a two-foot long machete. Won't be here until maybe next week, though. Maybe I should throw that one into the mix as well.
I'll have to do a comparison myself. I've got a Potbelly, a Machax, and now a Parang, so I need to do some convexing and really wring it out. I hefted a Parang at Cabela's yesterday, and it is a lot heavier than you would think. Not thin like a machete at all. I didn't buy it, what with Cabela's ridiculous markup, but I can wait the three days to get it in the mail.

The sawback machete? If so, it is a heavy beast....and the handle angle is a tad hard on the wrist...I think new scales would fix it though. I need to break mine out and do a choppity chop chop test.
Yeah, that's the one. I wanted to get an E-nep size 0, but I can't find one anywhere. So I settled for the sawback.

I also ordered one due to this thread. Got it from the river store, thank goodness. They have a liberal return policy.
The parang was duller than most butter knives. Considered sharpening it . . . then decided I wouldn't waste my time on a piece of BG junk that cost less than $28 delivered. The parang is upstairs boxed up and will be in the mail tomorrow for return . . . thanks to Amazon.
Never tried to chop or cut anything with it . . . couldn't stand the appearance of the thing with the orange/black BG insignia and handles.
Guess I'm spoiled by Becker QC . . . most of their stuff is shaving sharp out of the box.
Yeah . . . I know I'm biased.![]()
