Sad Day for My Pride and My Machax

I'd like to see how it does against a Kabar Cutlass. My Cutlass definitely out chops the BK9 with ease. I do like the looks of that parang, though. I've often caught myself with it in my hands, contemplating the purchase. I just love my tooj 1095 steel for great retention and ability to sharpen it in the field.

I was a bit surprised at the results as well. Fun day at the farm nonetheless.

I would really like to see a comparison of these 2.

I've put the Patrol Machete up against a $20 Ontario USGI machete.

Performance-wise, it's too close to call. Chopping power is about the same.

The Becker machete wins because it's faster and much more agile and has those great Becker ergonomics.

The Ontario USGI machete wins because it's $20. :p

machetes generally will outchop a knife. Every machete i own chop better than any knife 10" and under i own. I do have some goloks that do better, though.

:) this! +1

Alright you apes, I went ahead and ordered myself a Bear effin' Grylls Parang because of this thread. It should be here on Wednesday.

I can't believe I payed money for something with Bear Gryll's name on it. Something from Gerber no less. I'm blaming all of you for this horrifying turn of events. The next thing you know, I'll be running full speed down mountains to avoid pursuing bears and jumping off of cliffs into shallow water and squeezing elephant crap into my mouth to quench my thirst. I just hope I don't get stung by a bee.

I have looked at these myself....and like you the name(s) on it have stopped me. I think I'll wait to see how you like yours LOL

Bet it wont outchop a convexed Potbelly....

What I take away from this is this...Nothing bad against the Machax, since there is no one knife that does EVERYTHING better. I'm more surprised that good things are being said about a Gerber Bear Grylls product. Interesting contest, given the blade shapes.

Let us know, but I doubt you'll be too disappointed for the money (especially if you went the cheaper route and got it online for 20 some dollars.) Other than it being rather dull out of the box, BeckerRednecker and I haven't had many complaints. It chops, it batons, its a wood processing machine. I still like my Machax though and am understanding now what Ethan meant by "compact utility". These are 2 diiferent tools.

I was hoping it wouldn't outchop a convexed and freshly stropped Machax. But it did. I don't have enough chopping experience to know for sure, but I suspect Ethan is again correct when he said most of the time longer chops better.
I'm not trying to push BG products, but I've been surprised as well. The Parang doesn't suck. And I have a couple other BG things that IMO don't suck either. Like the fire steel that has the built in storage container which my more expensive light-my-fire doesn't have. I picked one of those up for around 10 bucks and I can't say that it is terrible. Go figure. What I have learned is that I should probably keep an open mind and test more things myself, in the way I would normally use them, before I decide what suits me best.

I'll have to do a comparison myself. I've got a Potbelly, a Machax, and now a Parang, so I need to do some convexing and really wring it out. I hefted a Parang at Cabela's yesterday, and it is a lot heavier than you would think. Not thin like a machete at all. I didn't buy it, what with Cabela's ridiculous markup, but I can wait the three days to get it in the mail.

I've also got an Aranyik hunting knife coming, which is basically a two-foot long machete. Won't be here until maybe next week, though. Maybe I should throw that one into the mix as well.

The sawback machete? If so, it is a heavy beast....and the handle angle is a tad hard on the wrist...I think new scales would fix it though. I need to break mine out and do a choppity chop chop test.

Yeah, that's the one. I wanted to get an E-nep size 0, but I can't find one anywhere. So I settled for the sawback.

I know where a Size 0 is......... ;)

When I bought mine, I think the river site said there were like less then 5 left.

Since this is a machete coversation, I WISH I could send you to a website which has nearly every type of machete imaginable, for some comparisons. If you google "machete specialists" you'll find it. They have stuff from all over the world, including Mooses favorite Tramontina and my favorite Imacasa (which makes the blades for BHKs machete). They have parangs, hooks, cane machetes, you name it.

No BK6s though, sadly. I AM in the market for the right machete since my BHK is now in the possession of a man named Eli. I like something with a two-handed handle.

Although I would never be caught dead with anything that had a big orange "BG" on it, sometimes they do surprise you. One of my favorite "machetes" is my Fiskars Brush Axe. There is a Gerber version too. You want something that can clear some brush with the quickness? Check that thing out!

I also ordered one due to this thread. Got it from the river store, thank goodness. They have a liberal return policy. ;)

The parang was duller than most butter knives. Considered sharpening it . . . then decided I wouldn't waste my time on a piece of BG junk that cost less than $28 delivered. The parang is upstairs boxed up and will be in the mail tomorrow for return . . . thanks to Amazon.

Never tried to chop or cut anything with it . . . couldn't stand the appearance of the thing with the orange/black BG insignia and handles.

Guess I'm spoiled by Becker QC . . . most of their stuff is shaving sharp out of the box.

Yeah . . . I know I'm biased. :)

Yeah, what I wouldn't give for a Ka-bar BK-6. A dull edge on the Parang is not a deal breaker for me. I'm used to the factory edges of machetes being duller than a conversation with my divorced aunts. I was planning to convex the Parang anyway, even if it came razor sharp. I'm weird like that. I'll put hours into saving a rusty, notched, $6 machete instead of just buying a new one. The handle on the Parang does annoy me, but I was thinking that if I like it and it performs well, I'll probably just stipple the handle and duracoat it a color I like. If I don't like it, well, I know a guy who wants one who would buy it from me no questions asked.

And speaking of Duracoat, I like those machetes of yours, CTanner. That snakeskin treatment is cool.
