Hey BF,

Just thought I would kinda share my disappointment. I've ordered probably a dozen knives from the US, and never had an issue with canadian customs. However, I got think that has changed. My knives are best case scenario just being really slow/stuck in customs, but most likely got seized by Canadian customs... RIP Zero Tolerance 0562BK x2. Anybody else want to vent about their annoying customs/shipping experiences?

Do you have any confirmation that customs has seized your knives, or are you just complaining about a delay?

It took over a month for a knife to ship from Russia to the US for me. However, I had patience.

Here in NZ if Customs seize a knife, they most certainly let me know, and quite promptly.
That's when the fun starts. Took me 6 months of hoop jumping to convince them a ZT 0452 was not a 'flick knife'. Got it eventually.

Clearly I would of stated a definite if I knew either way. However, I do know for a fact that the knife after arrived in Canada was sent CBSA for further review. This process is not uncommon however doesn't take long, never heard of it last more than 48 hours, normally under 24 hours if approved to enter country for expedited packages. However, this has been over 5 days so I will not know for sure until I received a notice in the mail from the CBSA that they seized my package. If the knife was cleared there would of been updates, the package is no longer in transition and when the CBSA doesn't provide updates to Canada Post that normally means the goods have been seized. If the knife was just delayed or being slow I would be fine. I wouldn't of made this post if there was a very likely chance (75%+) that my package was seized after speaking with multiple sources.

Sadly I won't know until i get a letter in the mail for sure, if it is seized CBSA stops providing information to Canada Post so it doesn't show what is going on via tracking. yes, I've heard that the it is quite fun trying convince customs that your knife is indeed legal.

Nearing Christmas likely. 5 days for review isn't terrible this time of year from the US.

I just received a Spyderco Para 3 and a Benchmade Griptilian from 2different US vendors to Toronto without issue and a ZT0350 and another Para 3 is on the way.

One thing I find VERY important is to ask the vendor to tighten the pivot before shipping. That way it won’t fail the “flick test” and get confiscated.

I would worry in another few days or if you get a letter, but not yet.

Good luck!

I live in ontario also, but Montreal is where my package was sent. May I ask what type of shipment you used, and did your package get stuck in review by CBSA?

Always USPS to Canada Post. All shipments were held for 1-3days. That was a few weeks ago. My ZT just shipped and the 2nd Para doesnt have tracking from BladeHQ.

I won’t buy anything in the US that comes UPS (total scumbags) or Fedex (kinda scumbags).

Yeah, I only use USPS also. I've never had a knife be in customs for more than 6 hours personally and I only use USPS. The shipping method I chose is the 6-10 business days one.

The knives that we have shipped to Canada that have been stopped by Customs have always been shipped back to us. It typically takes 4-6 weeks but we do get them back. Had a customer so determined one time that he actually had me take the knife apart and ship the handle and the blade separately. The handle got checked by customs and sent on through. The blade made it to him in record time. Hope you find a way to make it all work for you!

Well, what I've been hearing is that Canadian Customs sucks. If they can open it, it's gone.
Some manufacturer's are tightening the damn pivot so tight, it's a useless piece of metal until you unloosen the pivot.

Update: Called CBSA the customs depot where the knife got sent to isn't delayed and is on schedule.

A sad knife story with a happy ending!

Oh, sorry my post may of been confusing. The CBSA wouldn't talk specifics about my package, but they said that the customs depot where my package was sent wasn't running behind schedule. This is bad because the only reason we suspected it would of taken this long is because of holiday mail putting the customs behind schedule. Which many customs depots are, but this specific one isn't having any delays.

You have to take into account that Canada Post uses mule trains in the summer and dog sleds in the winter. Sometimes mail gets bogged down (literally) in the transition period. Plus, Canada Customs and Canada Post employees are SO overworked that they must take frequent breaks. That said, the mail usually does get through... eventually.
