The funny thing about that award pic is that while he doesn't seem to be smiling, those of us who were with him know that he was absolutely BEAMING. He had worked a full year on that push dagger, after carrying it around as a sketch for several years. I commissioned the project, and he took it, with the intention of taking that art prize at Badger. After a piece of ivory crumbled, he had spent most every waking hour of the 2 weeks leading up to the show carving a new handle, his girlfriend curled up next to him on the sofa. He even had his houseguest, Tinus Beukes, working on the sheath.
When he won, there was applause from all corners of the show floor, more than I think I've ever heard for a show prize like that. He had recognition of his talent by the judges, the fruition of a long-time project, and a room full of friends who were all so happy for him. For those of us who, for show after show, called Bub's table headquarters, it was an incredibly emotional moment. For Bub, I think it was a step past overwhelming.
