Safe buffer speed?

Buffers scare the crap out of me. Ive had knives tore from my hands just cuzz I eased up my grip. I have 2 buffers one for wood that has brown polish and just a plain clean wheel to polish it to shine more. the steel buffer has 2 compounds one is green for stainless and most other steels and matchless white for handles and super shine on stainless. I have not buffed anything for a while but am going to try Dennis Paish method by screwing the knife to a 2x2 2 ft long. Ialso want to ask a question. How many people rake the buffing wheel and how often???. kellyw

I've used two buffers since I started making knives. One was a 2HP model @ 1725 RPMs and the other was a .5HP model at 3600 RPMs. The higher horse power models seem more dangerous because they allow you to lean into the work without stalling; tempting you to get that last scratch out the easy way. I can stall a .5 HP buffer with my bare hand.
