I taught and am teaching my daughter how to:
Properly pass a sheath knife vs. a folder.
How to properly care for and sharpen the blade.
The types of knives and their uses.
The proper sheath it should be carried with.
How to handle the knife around other people.
How not to have an accident with the business end of the blade.
After all this we ended up in the field hunting one day and I found her digging a hole with the newly sharpened skinner I gave her and realized the lessons to learn with knives really never seem to end!
My middle daughter is 5, I don't give her knives just yet, but I have made her a couple out of wood. I make her treat it as if it is real...practice makes perfect.
