Safe or Out?

I just got back from the local knife shop, where I saw another knife nut who seems to be there more than I am. We looked over the knives and shot the shat. While talking I asked him about a Reeves Mnandi he had traded for last time I saw him. I asked if he enjoyed it and put it to use, he replied that it was in his safe. Come on! I would not buy a knife just to see it sit unused. Some of the exotic knives I own, still get carried around if not used. I realize some things are not meant to be used but I think they should still go "out on the town". What do you guys think?

I don't even own a safe. All the knives I buy are with the intent of use; some don't make it there, but I must say I don't collect knives just to look at them. Actually, I don't really collect knives; I just use them.

Buddhists have a saying, "The plate is already broken."

In other words, if you can accept that life and all things in it are only temporary, you won't be that upset when they come to an end.

If he gets his pleasure from keeping a great knife locked up in a safe, that's his right. But I'm with you on this one, I feel that using a beautiful object intensifies it's beauty even while marring it's outward appearence...

I have never understood the concept of a safe queen, if I am afraid to use something because I may mar it or make it worth less money I get rid of it. (I get rid of almost nothing so yes, I do use some very nice collector's items) I have always felt part of the pride in ownership is in using the item. This goes for knives, guns, cars, lighters, watches...whatever.

I buy a bunch of knives, always with the thought that I might carry them. Often, after handling them, if I decided not to EDC, I will put them in the safe. It gets them out of the way (and relatively free from theft), untill I get a chance to sell them.

Like next year, or the year after, or .....................

Depends on your collecting criteria. If you collect primarily as an investment, they should be kept in a safe with an occational exit for show and tell. If you collect for sportsman use or to have fun, the by all means they should be beat and used. But a safe always has its place to minimize the risk of significant financial loss in the event of a burglary or fire.

No safe here, but most of the knives in my collection are put back...after all, it's a collection! No investment intent here; I just like collecting knives, and prefer to maintain their original appearance as long as possible. I take them out of their boxes, pouches, zipper cases, etc. periodically to clean and lube them and check for corrosion, but most of all to appreciate their beauty. For myself and many other collectors, this fulfills a legitimate purpose i.e. this is use, and the constant reintroduction of threads claiming otherwise gets pretty old. :(

Give it a rest! :thumbdn:

I have several knives that I carry and use for cutting chores...uncarried duplicates of these reside in my collection, but none of the knives in my collection are unused from my point of view.

I always say I'm "going to put this one up", but I never do. I'v foung that I get much more enjoyment from my knives when I'm able to use and enjoy them.

None of mine are kept in a safe, but then I do not have a knife collection, nor do I own any expensive knives.

I can understand keeping a knife in a safe. I can also understand having a safe queen.
I just don't have any.

The only ones that I have that are safe queens are the ones that I'm thinking of selling, and those that I'm saving for my kids. Other than that, they all have character! :D

i have a huge safe for my guns but none of my 100+ knives are in there. there is also no way in hell that im gonna be able to use all of them so my reason for buying is not as users. they might be purchased for intention of using like some have said above but there just no way to give all of them the deserved playing time, someones gonna have to ride the bench........

I just can't see the sense of keeping knives in safes.

If it's from an investment standpoint, it makes a bit more sense. But for an investment, I'm thinking more along the lines of gold rather than knives.

I have or own over a hundred knives. I cant carry them all. So yes I keep em in a safe or box and I rotate them out. Although I do have a few that are always carried everyday like my Spyderco Native and Vic. rucksak.

A double-Amen, brother.

If you are collecting knives as an investment you are in the wrong business.

The gentlemen that put away knives should thank those that use them. By using them you are degrading their "collector value" and increasing the perceived value of the safe queens.

My ex-sister-in-law thought she was going to make a bundle when Beenie Babies were the rage. She had a trunk full of them. She was sure she would be able to unload them and be rich. She waited too long and they ended up being worth less than she paid for them.

I buy my knives to use, and I buy custom knives. The enjoyment in having these knives is in USING them!! That is just how I feel about this.

with guns, we always said "hangers and bangers" the ones that you hang on the wall and that actually go BANG. if you like hangers, good for you :-) everybody collects the way they want to. personally, i'll stick with Bangers. that applies to knives, guns, trucks, whatever. not that there isn't a "safe queen" in the bunch, but they're definately the exception.

disclaimer - i won't spend more than $200 on ANY knife.

my edc right now is a emerson specwar CQC13 worth in the $1500 range, so i'll carry & use anything.

that said i have ~60 knives so some do sit in storage in LNIB shape, and will remain that way,

i have carried some nice customs, and enjoy it, hey ya only live once, right?
