Safe placement of a 100 lb. propane cylinder?

If you look at the stores that have cages of prefilled cylinders for sale like the propane cylinders at wallmart, or the air gas cylinders at TSC stores
, they are in ventilated cages that may still have a roof and sides semi enclosed protected but still ventilated.

I'm sure there are regulations that force them to do that.

Yes there are and most local building codes in regards to propane are modeled after National Fire Protection Association Codes (NFPA 58) These regulations basically say that a tank of the size of the OP's should not be located inside a occupied building, but should be outside in a well ventilated area and at least 10' from any vent or ignition source.

For those of you with indoor tanks, it's very unlikely that a properly installed tank will develop a leak, but one that does is extremely dangerous. Propane sinks and pools and when ignited is tremendously explosive. A tank the size of the OP's could practically level a typical family residence and kill everyone inside. Not something I personally would want to risk. If you did manage to survive such an event, your insurance company would probably not cover your lose. Again, not something I would want to risk.

I agree, the chance of something happening might be small but the potential damage that can be done is huge, just not worth the risk.
