Safe Queens

I have a box of knives that I rotate through but also another one where I buy them look at them and decide that they are going into storage for a future day. The future day happens to be when I need $$ for more knife purchases :)

I think most of us have some safe queens because even if we rotate knives for edc, you would be changing knives every other day given how many many of us have. I do like to use my knives and have what I would call fewer safe queens, but as already stated, some are hard to replace if lost or damaged. For example, I really enjoy my CRK Sebenza 31 night sky, its a beautiful knife, but I use a PJ sebenza 31 as my user. I also rely more on folders with a lock rather than a slipjoint because I think they are safer. I got a chuckle of all the knife boxes some of you have. I have the same issue. Boxes everywhere. I think I collect knives because it is fun and I admire their beauty and functionality. Seeing them in action is rewarding.

I have run into this dilemma with every collectible-type item I've been interested in. The general rule is that unless it has historical value and there is no need to use it, it gets sold. I do have around ten knives that won't get used or sold, but new knives will either get used or I will eventually get rid of them - I keep such 'candidates for exit' in their original boxes in one place, and expect to have a big sale some day. But perhaps I will plan a trip that just screams for bringing one of them along.

I use all of my knives so I don’t think nine of them are actually a safe queen
However because some of them are rare pieces I preserve these more than the other but they still see some use

I must revise my previous statement. I have knife that doesn't leave the house. It's been carried and used, but it's a shallow carry clip and has immense sentimental value, and I am afraid to lose it.

I was given a fixed blade for my birthday Wednesday that will be a decoration in my office. Not something I would normally buy, it is not "practical."

My uncle just gave me an old Imperial slipjoint that I will also never carry, but is well used. I have two other traditional I don't carry, they are not my thing but I've carried them in the past.

My three "safe queens" so to speak:

Happy belated birthday! That fixed blade definitely does not look practical, but at least they tried!
And it’s unique and pretty cool looking.
I very rarely get knives as gifts, since everyone who knows me knows I have too many knives as is lol

It just depends on what you enjoy about your hobby.

While I enjoy carrying and "appropriately" using my knives, some might get just as much enjoyment occasionally unboxing and fondling their knives.

I will say that experience has shown me that very few collectors of any collectible ever realize any financial windfall "someday".

This is due in great part to the inability to recognize when it is time to end one's hobby and sell the collection off. That task is almost invariably left to heirs.

I am into collecting a couple things other than knives, and sadly, I have more than a few friends who have always had that "someday I'll sell all of this" dream but now they are too old to ever be able to sell it off short of having an auction company come in and do it for them.

I did meet one fellow in my lifetime who did hold his own estate auction. He said he wanted to see it all sell and didn't want his family to deal with it. He was the only one that got out alive.
What is the problem with leaving it to heirs? Why not enjoy your collection for a lifetime?

I buy things I like. Somethings I like to use, somethings I like to look at.

Knives are like guns to me. I would love to be able to afford safe queens, but I just can't keep up the hobby side of it all if I buy knives to sit in my safe. I have a colt 1903 from 1917, which I don't shoot a lot, but I do shoot it some. I also had a Hi Power from the german occupation, that I couldn't shoot so I sold it off to buy stuff I could use. My knives are the same way, I don't have to use them up, but I just can't really afford to leave one sitting and never being used.

Thanks.
It was unexpected gift. Definitely unique, and very thoughtful.

I think that I have a problem, these are the ones that I purchased when they came out thinking that I could get one of each style from each company, benchmade, Spyderco, master of defense, customs. This lasted for around a year before it became obvious that I misjudged what that would cost, so here they sit.
These are what I carry on a regular basis,
Still visit the closet on a regular basis but they don’t get regular use🤫🙁
Wow!!!

I generally buy knives in anticipation of using them - I love trying a new knife just like driving a new car.

I have exactly one “safe queen” which is this trench knife that my Dad found on the beach before I was born and gave me when I was about 13…

Found on the beach??? Like he stormed the beach and “found” it, or y’all were slapping on sunscreen and he found it lol. I would love some back story, nothing better than finding something this cool!!

I have a couple safe queens that I will not use due to not being able to replace them. One of them is a handmade knife and the knife maker has passed away. I am guilty of buying knives that I plan to use, but end up using my old stand by instead. Maybe I will start rotating my EDC knives.

I finally have one. I really want to use it but I have it's more common counterpart. Part of the reason I haven't thrown it in the pocket is it feels like I'd be shorting the whole community if I did. If that makes sense. I think it's 104 outa 500.20230302_083345.jpg

Thanks for posting this - it’ll be a perfect excuse to get a better history from him. If I recall he found it in tge sand in front of Fort Point in SF when he was a teenager but I’m not certain. Stand by and I’ll check with him. :)
