Safer Tenacious

Spyderco Tenacious is likely the best budget knife. Certainly it offers the best quality and robustness that $30 can buy you. However, as my poor thumb will testify, the fact that the edge is sharpened all the way down, can cause injury to the wielder when closing this liner-lock.

To avoid further encounters between my thumb and the sharpened edge of the Tenacious (for the record, my thumb lost the last one), I grabbed my trusty Dremel. After about 1 minute with the grinding wheel, and another minute with the polishing wheel, here's the result.

Nice job:thumbup: Doing simple modifications to make a knife "your own" can be one of the most fun parts of collecting. Now let's see if your thumb goes unscathed for a while:D

Very nice and proffesional. Not knowing the tenacious design and looking at the picture before reading it, I thought that your modification was actually part of the tenacious design. Great job.

Good work, always disliked that part of the knife. Unsafe for a folder IMO.

Actually, if they extended the "tang" choil a bit, so that it sits fairly flush with the handle, it would make the knife a lot safer.

Nice mod BTW.

I am glad you were able to mod your Tenacious to work for you.

But, I have to (STRONGLY) disagree here in regards to changind the design or other designs with the blades edge in close to the handle. I HIGHLY prefer the edge sharpened as close to the handle as possible.

I can understand where some might cut themselves if improperly or carelessly handling a knife. Cuts do happen with knives at times.

But, I would rather take care in how I handle my knives and "KEEP" knives being made to maximize funtional performance. I don't consider the Tenacious unsafe or hazardous.

I use and cut with the sharpened blade up close to the handle VERY often and don't want that taken away. That is a problem I have with other designs and choils that are not functional.

For those who feel they need to sand or grind off some of the sharp edge at certain areas, that is a MUCH easier mod than trying to sharpen a choil. As gnius stated: "1 minute" for his modification.

I like the design of the Tenacious a lot. I wish mine were a little smoother opening and closing, but the design is VERY good IMO. I vote to keep it as is and hope other designs keep the functional value of an edge close to the grip in mind.

Nice work.

I however prefer to just move my thumb out of the way when closing a liner lock. I personally think that is an unneeded modification. It may be great for you but that's like having to put "Caution coffee may be HOT" on McDonald's cups just because one person got burned. I say leave the knife as is. :)

I have to agree with the guys about the blade being sharpened all the way to the handle. Now, that your thumb was cut probably means there is still room for improvement (put a flipper on it?), but one of the things I look for in a knife is that your grip goes as close to the blade as possible, and the blade has as much edge as possible.

I really like how the Captain does it.

+1 But, actually WORSE!!! Putting a caution label on a coffee cup may seem silly... But, at least it doesn't reduce the quality of the product! ;)

I like my hand close to the blade. Secure grip, but close to the blade.
