How do you "ring" a grinding wheel?

Put a finger in the arbor hole and hold it up. Tap the wheel, and you will hear a tuning fork like "ring". This indicates the wheel is "sound". Try it with a new wheel to get an idea of what to listen to.

Tap the side of it while it is suspended on something convenient, like a screwdriver through the hole.
