Shop safety is a topic that we should all have good working knowledge of and practice diligently. However, it does not get discussed often enough. One of my problems is with safety glasses fogging up. I always wear both a dust mask and safety glasses. Breathing through the dust mask vents my breath into my glasses fogging them up. I have tried on of those anti fog sprays, but the results were not good. Any suggestions out there?

You might want to invest in a face shield. This would keep sparks ect.. from hitting youw whole face. You might also want to think about wearing a respirator instead of just a dust mask. I always wear one it's more efficient at keeping out dust, some of which (like ivory, pearl and Desert Ironwood) is toxic. And last but not least, ear protection, grinders can put out a lot of noise.

A knife is no more than an iron tooth

Another alternative is to wear goggles rather than glasses - they seal all the way round your eyes, so you can't breathe into them.

Also, 3M makes a respirator for welding fumes that has a new vent that is supposed to eliminate fogging. Go with the welding one over the dust one because of the vapors that come off the steel/belt as you grind. These are about $5 each from MSC, in their latest flyer.

Well speaking of safety, I just bought myself a new respirator/sheild today, I got a combination respirator/ face sheild, looks like something straight out of the fire station...

I got mine from MSC and I can say that this is the first respirator that is actually comfortable on me and doesnt fog...

I used to use one exactly like it when I was casting bronze for a living, so I figured it would work fine for grinding knives and handle materials...

I use a respirator and goggles but the goggles still fog up, I've tried everthing from the el-cheapy goggles to the $30. electrician ones, and THEY ALL FOG

A guy in my shop has a problem with his safety glasses fogging up. His solution is so simple it's elegant. He just took a #21 drill and drilled a line of small holes along the bottom edge of the lenses! This vents much of the moist air right out before it can condense and fog you up.

I cut it, and I cut it, and it's STILL too short!

I have tried the goggles, they still fog. I will try the drilling holes thing. I have many pairs extra as none seemed to work. I suspect the problem will be the same with the face shield. The mask would still vent to the inside and make it fog. What is MSC? I would be interested in trying the welding respirator. I have not heard of them before. I have a gas mask. I have not tried it yet. The view would be limited.

If the holes in the bottoms, or the welding respirator does not work, I always have access to full chem suits with supplied air. Might get a little bit hot though.

Glenn
