Alright guy's & gal's,

I'm going to purchase one of these for an EDC. I know the Sage 1 is about $25 bucks more. Price isn't a factor here. I more or less am just curious which of the two you think is more popular?

I know the Sage has better steel so that's the reason for the higher pricing. Two different locks & I'm good with either one. I currently have a full size grip and a TI Sage 2.

I have some Paypal money that's asking to be spent on a knife. It's either the carbon fiber sage or a blue mini grip?

I'm hoping I can get you's guys to just add either the sage or mini grip as your vote. I don't know how to post a pole so this is the only other way for me to see what the consensus is?

In all honesty I'm curious to see if an inferior steel and also a lower priced knife for that matter, can still get the popular vote?
The Mini Grip seems to be having a rising in popularity as of late?

So with that, which would you choose? (Doesn't have to be the blue colored mini grip, just the MG in general)

EDIT: I didn't originally mention that I will be carrying this knife inside a "Mission Wallet". Just ordered the wallet so I have no idea if the Sage would even fit in one of the outside slots? I know with the Spydie hole the blade sits wider in the closed position though.

I'm a big fan of the mini grip, with that said, between the two I would pick the sage 1. I prefer the ergos, steel, and handle material over the mini grip. Well worth the price difference imo.

I don't have the numbers, but I am sure the Mini Griptillian is more popular by a mile. It is cheaper, and it has been in production much longer than the Sage. Except for models like the Delica/Endura/Ladybug/Dragonfly/Native, Spyderco tend to produced in pretty small runs. The Griptillian is a base model and is produced in large numbers like the Delica is for Spyderco.

I like the Sage 1 more for a "dressier" look, more gentleman's folder type with the wire clip and CF scales, even tho they are laminate. The mini grip to me has a more "worker" look and feel to it, great knife too. Popularity wise, I'm thinking mini grip, but I like the Sage 1 a little more.

Thanks for chiming in derrick/anthony/ColdSpyder/lobodelanoche. My original instinct was, go with the Sage. But now its telling me Mini Griptilian. I think this may end up being a situation where if I get the grip ill be thinking should of got the sage & vice versa.
I would love to get both but can only swing one or the other at this time.

I guess another way to think of it is, which one would last longer? In other words which one would you see yourself handing down to your son/grand kid?
I think with this question it's making things a bit clearer. The Sage seems to be more of a pass down knife.

Man, I'm starting to get all deep over a pocket knife!?

I think it's official, Stamped & certified knife nut! LOL.

I'd say that the Mini Grip is more popular due to the fact that it's been in production quite a bit longer and is cheaper. However, I'd definitely pick the Sage 1 over the Mini Grip. It's got a better blade steel, better handle and much better ergonomics. I also prefer the reliability of a liner lock, though the Axis Lock is fun to play with. I've had a few Omega Springs bust on me and it's an inconvenience to have to send a knife back in to Benchmade just for a new spring. Keep in mind that this failure is rare, so I may have just been unlucky.

Either one is a quality knife, but I prefer the Sage 1.

Both those knives will last a very long time with reasonable care/no abuse. The Sage is a dressier knife and the mini Grip is more of a "working" knife. As stated above, the Grips are value leaders for Benchmade, so they will sell far more units than the Sage, which is aimed at a narrower niche.

Sage 1 all the way. I wasn't too impressed with my mini grip. The Sage is a great EDC.

I may just go ahead and get the sage now and the next knife down the road will be the mini grip. The pro's out weigh the cons with the Sage. One of the big ones is that this will be used as my EDC for work. I wear slacks and am in & out of the office throughout the day. I just hope it's up to the task of random heavy use. (Not abuse) I feel like for a $100 the knife should be able to handle moderate heavy use from time to time. No prying or anything like that. Would be instances like cutting pieces of carpet (cutting bits of the corners off to check what type of flooring lays beneath. On mostly bank owned vacant houses), opening up cardboard boxes, scraping gunk off of random crap in again vacant bank owned properties.
If you haven't guessed I'm in the Real Estate business. So one day I could be checking the condition of a property for a client (doing the things mentioned above) or I could be driving around with clients all day. As busy as I am, it gets pretty random.
When I'm not working or wearing slacks, its usually cargos (military type). I then wear any dang knife I feel like that day. Lol.

So for me the knife is a tool. Although there's been an alarming situation as of lately about some strange man showing up to open houses throughout the city and just sitting in his near by parked car and just doing who knows what?! Kinda creepy to be honest. I haven't run into him yet but will give him a face full of pepper spray should he decided to do something dumb!

Ok I'm getting totally off track here. To stay on subject, I most likely will just pick up the Sage. The slap on sticker of carbon fiber on the sage will go better with all my slacks anyways.

I have a Sage 2 and also a Ritter mini grip and I would say the the Benchmade is the way to go. The axis lock is world class plus there are multiple upgrade options with the Grip.

Mini grip by a mile.

I used to own a Sage. I probably got a lemon, because the blade chipped out very easily, which made it a complete rip off for the price. Wasn't abusing it either, just spent a morning cutting up cardboard boxes at work and came home and noticed chips in the blade edge.

I think the mini grip is more popular. I'd also say the the Grip is the way to go. Love basically everything about it (for the price, I wonder if g10 scales would improve it)

I'd get the Mini-Grip, considering you already got a Sage Ti. Axis lock is freaking awesome man, plus it is cheaper. Popularity wise? I think the Mini-Grip is, mainly b/c it is cheaper.

Great thread! Also my favorite view.

For what you've described in post #10 I wouldn't use either knife that you've mentioned. Neither one has a comfortable hande for me to use in those ways. If you want to stick with Spyderco, I'd go for a Para 2 or a Native 5 (if the P2 is too large). If you want BM, I'd look at a large or small Bone Collector or a Rift, if you can find one.

Personally, I'd use a small FB for the uses you've listed. The right size FB can be carried in a pocket sheath and can probably fit in any space that a Sage or mini-G will fit, and you'll have a more comfortable handle, at least in my hand it would be. Neither of the knives you mentioned seem to fit me very well for more than just light occasional use.
