Sage 1 or Sage 5?

I am considering getting the Spyderco Sage 1, but I remembered that the Sage 5 released, and I don't have any knives with a compression lock. Which one do you guys think is better for carry and why?

I think both would be good for carry.
It just depends on which lock you would rather have.
I like both lock types a lot, but I've been using liner and RIL locks since they came out, so that is the lock I am more used to and prefer, and have the Sage 1.

If you've never had a compression lock I think I would go with that. You will never know if you like it unless you try one.
I don't think you could go wrong with either though.

I prefer the compression lock on the Sage 5, but the liner lock on the Sage 1 is more familiar. If you have not used a compression lock, there is a little bit of a learning curve.

For me, I still prefer the Sage 1. Perhaps it's because liner-lock feels for natural/fluid/gentlemanly.

Sage 5. It's 4 better. More seriously, either one will probably be more than sufficient, but I find the compression lock all-around superior to the liner lock.

Sage 1 is a hell of a deal and will hold it's value. Start there IMO.

I've been wanting a Sage 1 also but I'm going to wait for the Five to come out...I'm a fan of the comp lock though and that's the only reason. Most everything I've read on the One has been positive...a lot of fans out there.

Do you find that it's easier to use?

Absolutely. I'm very comfortable hitting the comp lock and just flicking the blade closed without ever looking at the knife. I've learned the hard way not to ever pull a no-look close with a knife that requires putting my fingers in the path of the blade to unlock it.

How does it feel in hand? Would you consider it to be a hot spot?

Sage 1. I don't own the sage 5 but I have the paramilitary 2 which has a compression lock, and like someone else said it is one big hot spot so I would recommend the sage 1

Good point. Not only that, but I could buy a Sage 1 at an Army Barracks store near me, but I don't think they have the Sage 5 yet, and I don't feel like having it shipped to me lol.

Go and get it...even though I'm waiting for the 5, I don't think you can go wrong trying out the 1 now. Plus if you don't like it, you can always sell it here and get most your $$ back

Never had it bother me at all. Don't own a Sage 5, but I've owned, and used extensively, a PM2, Superleaf, Yojimbo 2 and Szabo and it hasn't bothered me on any of those models.

The liner and frame lock are the predominant lock style by far. Me, I would want something different.

As the price gets higher, the more frame/liner locks you will see. In the $100-$200 spectrum, you have a lot more options.

I like the compression lock, easy to use ambidextrously. My favorite is the caged ball bearing lock on the Manix 2.

Go Sage 5 IMO.

I don't think you can go wrong with either. It's really what you like best and which you think looks or would feel best. I'd probably lean towards the 5 since it is a little different from your standard frame/liner lock but the 1 is popular because it's a great knife. Really, which do you like better? Buy that one.

Very nice picture! Did you take that one?

Thanks!. Took a few pics at some ruins a while back. Buy the Sage1 now, consider the Sage5 after it drops (by then you'll probably own the 1,2, and 3 anyway ;)
