Sage 1 trump the Caly 3?

One thing I have noticed, for me the Caly3 feels best when choking up to use the choil. The Sage handle is a tad longer and wider allowing it to feel good in my hand either using the choil or not. This would probably make the Sage a little more effective on harder cutting tasks where a full grip on the handle is used but I still prefer the Caly3 overall.

I can be wrong, but I considering that my beloved G10/ VG10 Caly3 is discontinued and Sage is in production, Sage won. But I strongly believe that the only reason is price

Sage I > Caly 3

Just my opinion, even though I can get the Caly 3 sharper. Perhaps that is more a reflection of my sharpening skills with VG-10 compared to S30V though. Sage I just fits my hand like a glove, I love the CF, I love its light weight and open construction. Caly 3 just doesn't fit my hand as well. Oh well, all this proves is that Spyderco is capable of creating ergonomic designs for everyone!

So the large cutout for the lock on the Sage doesn't bother anyone else? It just completely messes up the feel of the knife having my index finger close more than the rest of my fingers when grabbing the handle. If I use the choil it feels good but I don't always want to have to use the choil.

Give me the Caly. In fact I'm trying to get ride of the Sage II because I have never used it and it just sits in its box.

Before I really got into the smaller Spydies, I used to carry larger (~4") knives. I have a Sage I, Sage II, CF Caly 3, and CF Native, also a Lum Folder. I love all of them and they are all in my EDC rotation. I find that I am carrying the Caly 3 more often than any of the others. There is just something about the small, slim profile of the knife that makes it nearly disappear in my pocket. The others are not too large. But, I can tell they are there. I often completely forget that the Caly is in my pocket. Also, the laminated ZDP-189 blade cuts through just about anything as if it were butter.

Since I prefer a good liner lock over a back lock, the Sage wins in that respect. Sage is bigger and wider, making it a better fit for someone with large hands.(although I'm sure it would work for anyone)

To me the Sage is such a home run, I don't know how it can be topped by Spyderco in bang for the buck.

Actually, I find the Tenacious ergos to be outstanding for any price point. The blade shape and size are perfect with a nice deep belly. If Sal put better washers on it and used a VG-10 or higher quality steel and sold it (street price) for $50, I would buy another one! Is that asking too much? Maybe, but I have to ask.

I love the shape of the Tenacious, and would love to see a nicer blade steel offering as well.

I've EDC'd my G10 Caly3 for the last year and a half. Just picked up a Sage I in January and now my poor Caly is feeling neglected, as the Sage gets all the pocket time now. I think that the Sage is probably my favorite Spydie so far! The only way to top it would be a ball bearing lock.

Had a Caly 3. Bought a Sage I. Sold the Caly 3.
Sage just felt better in my hand.

I almost like my story, but end is different.
Had Caly3, bought Sage, sold Sage, still carry Caly3. Over three years for now.
There is something for everybody.

It took me a while to realize that you were putting your index finger in the "wrong" place.

The index finger choil is actually on the blade. Your middle finger goes in the cutout for the liner lock.

The Sage fits my hand either way. That's one advantage it has over the Caly3 for me. I can choke up to the choil or hold it by the handle only, both are equally comfortable to me. I just like how much thinner, smaller and smoother the Caly3 is overall. Both are keepers that's for sure.
