Sage or Caly? Need advice....

I've been considering both of these as well, and pretty much decided on the Caly at this point.

I like the Sage a little better because of the screw construction. The Caly3 is pinned and is not flow though. Easier to clean.

The Sage is easier to clean, but the Caly3 CF is a real classic design. I prefer the smooth CF over textured on the Sage, not to mention the beautifully laminated ZDP blade.

None of the above...The Paramilitary 2

I could be biased though since I just got mine a few days ago :D

(but seriously the Paramilitary 2 is great)

did you make a decision yet? i just ordered a sage and can't wait to get it into my hands.

I do like my Sage a whole lot more than my Caly 3. The feel of both knives are great, they both cut really well, but the S30V and the Walker liner lock won me over. My favorite of the lock backs is the Endura.

They are so different for being the same size knife. I got the Sage first and the Caly later. Again, very different knives, glad to have both in my edc rotation:thumbup:

what would you say each model excels in or would be more useful for?

I own all of those but the Benchmade so I'll take a shot if you don't mind.

The Military is the ultimate EDC folder IMHO. It's light, thin, sturdy and has unbeatable ergonomics. It carries amazingly well for it's size. Like all full flat grind spydercos it's an excellent slicer. It also excels at food prep where the extra blade length over the average folder is nice. Handle texture is grippy.

The Sage1 is a great EDC if you can't legally carry a blade as long as the Military, It's my second favorite knife behind the Military. It rides lower in the pocket and has a better pocket clip. It's only drawbacks compared to the Military are the shorter blade and less handle length which somewhat limits grip options. Handle texture is luxurious.

The Caly3 is even slimmer and smaller than the Sage although the blades are comparable in size. It rides even lower and is the best choice for real tight pants or small pockets. The shape is a bit slimmer so it doesn't fill my hand as well as the Sages. I also don't find the back lock as practical although it does have a quality snap to it. It is an elegant design that seems less suited for hard work than the Military and Sage although that may not actually be the case. It is also pinned together instead of screwed, so it can't be fully disassembled like the Sage and Military. Handle texture is smooth but it doesn't really matter because spyderco ergos are so good.

The Leek is fun to operate and rides very slim also but doesn't ride as low as the Sage or Caly3. It's handle and blade ergos don't even come close to the three spydercos IMO and it's a more complicated design overall. A great knife for the money but mine NEVER gets carried over the aforementioned spydercos.

thanks, i was really only asking about the sage and caly but all your descriptions are well appreciated and helpful :D

You picked a couple of the absolute best EDC blades out there (for most people). the only good advice is get the one you can get the best deal on and then buy the other when a better deal pops up.

as have I. I chose the Caly 3 also since I already have a lot of S30V knives (great steel BTW) and I want to try out the ZDP for myself. but like all the others have said, all 3 are fantastic knives and they all have a very large following...for a reason: they are all super knives!
