Went to the knife dealer today to pick up a ZT0801.. ended up coming home with the ZT0801 and a Spyderco Sage 3..

These are quality knives - the ZT comes the sharpest..scary sharp. Love the scale on the Sage 3.. feels great in the hand.. this knife is so smooth to open and the blade effortlessly glides back into the handle.. it even feels natural opening and closing left handed. Love the lockup snap and closing sound.

Also own a Sage 4 (the Sage 2&1 are next on the shopping list). The Sage 4 is one of my favorite knives.. it is the heaviest of the Sage knives at 4.2 ounces but this knife is so solid that when it locks up it feels like you are holding a fixed blade - no exaggeration. The wood and titanium scale also make the Sage 4 one of the most attractive knives made by Spyderco.

If you are new to the Sage series.. here is how Spyderco describes them: "Spyderco’s Sage Series is a family of knives that showcases the innovative lock mechanisms that have helped define modern folding knife technology."

Each of the knives have the same dimensions (total length is 7&11" with a 3" blade - IMO ideal for an EDC) and steel (CPM S30V) but different scale materials and locking mechanisms as follows:

Sage 1 (liner lock)

Sage 2 (frame lock)
http://m.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=421
Sage 3 (bolt action lock)
http://m.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=849
Sage 4 (front lock)

So the question is why aren't Spyderco's Sages given more love from the regs on Bladeforums?.. everyone talks about Gayle Bradley, Para2, Manix, Delica etc.. but rarely see mention of the Sage series....

Do you love your Sage or does it deserve to be overlooked?

I only have the Sage and Sage 2. They are great knives, and have been around for a few years now. I think part of the reason is that the blade length restrictions or lack there of may play a role. I personally like 4 inch blades, the 3 just doesn't really do much for me in terms of what my needs are. I own smaller knives because I am a collector, larger blades get much more love from me. If you are barely discovering these knives, then you are sadly late to the "love party". The praises have been sung for years now and still are from time to time as folks new to the knife world discover what many have known for years. ;)

Thanks for the insight RevDevil. So what you are saying is am like the 15 year old who just discovered Led Zeppelin? .. But at least the 15 year old realizes the music is old! LOL

The sage series is great. I have 1, 2 and 3. All great. Keepers for sure.

And as a perspective, I was turned on to the sage series just last year by the praises on this forum so you aren't that far behind.

I'm one of the few people who prefers the Sage 1 over the 2. I've had both and I just prefer the feel of the CF over G10. It's probably one of my top3 Spydercos. Ive only owned the first two in the series, I still have the 1.

That is one way to look at it I guess. I will say that I still have both the Sage knives I bought new years ago. The reason for that is what you outlined earlier. They really are great knives and they have remained in production because of their outstanding fit and finish, quality, and functionality. Get them all if you can, it is a great knife to collect and use.

Get yourself a Military too. ;)

Thought your post was hilarious, mainly cuz found a couple of the historical threads and realized everything you said was true. Glad you enjoy appreciate the Sage too.. Pretty impressive that Spyderco could design these and produce them with the quality they do considering they all function differently..

will check out the military.. Can't remember the name but the dealer also showed me a Spyderco flipper which was pretty awesome too. Also, love the mini knives.. so then there's that....

Better late than never bro!!

I own both the Sage1 & 2 models and have found both to be vantastic edc folders. Great values with quality fit and finishes!

I have the Sage 1 and Sage 4 and agree they are fine value knives with great fit and finish typical of Spyderco Taiwan origin knives. If I collect another, it will be the Sage 2. Hard to be the Sage 1 for a great edc for the price.

This statement confused me - I have no issue with you preferring the Sage 1, but referencing G10 doesn't make sense...the Sage 2 doesn't have G10 scales. (They're titanium)
Are you sure you didn't have the Sage 3?

I was confused about the same thing when reading that.
is the Carbon fiber actually laminated OVER G10 like on Dice/etc?

I can't wait until they do a Compression lock Sage, but sounds like that will be a few renditions away still...

I have a Sage 2, and like it a lot because of its simplicity, just 2 slabs of ti, a blade and a clip. Its a rinse and forget knife in terms of corrosion resistance, so it sees a lot of fruit processing. Works well as an office knife with the deep carry wire clip, especially when wearing brown Chinos.

Fit and finish is exceptional for the price, it came absolutely flawless from the Taiwan factory.

This is my mistake. I had it in my head that the Sage 1 had G10 underneath the CF to give it such a great grip. Either way, I love the looks and feel of the 1 but the whole Sage line is exceptional IMO. Sorry for the confusion.

Sorry - you said you prefer the Sage 1 over the Sage 2, then said you prefer CF over G10...my tired brain thought you were saying that the Sage 2 had G10. I have no idea if the Sage 1 is CF on G10.

I had heard that it did, that's why it is much "grippier" than the ZDP-189 Caly 3 CF so I assumed it was true. I can't find nothing to back it up now so it must have been misinformation.

If carbon fiber is laminated over G10 I don't see how that could alter the surface or feel/grip. I think it would essentially just be done as a filler for economical reasons. What you might be thinking of is Peel Ply carbon fiber, where the outer layer of resin is just textured for more grip. I really like Peel Ply!

You can see that I love these Sages also. Had a lot more than I needed, as I never carry the 3" models.
The first pic is Sage 2's; the second is Sage 3 in carbon fiber and blue G-10, followed by a Sage 2. Yes, this is a great series.
