I imagine a blade length of 8-9cm would be about right. The knife, as a whole, would need to be stoutly built. The independently locking blade and marlinspike will encourage heavy use - side and twisting stresses. I think a shackle key, or slot, is necessary. If a sailor really has no shackles to tend, at least it's a nod to tradition.
