SAK choices

I carry a Farmer or Soldier, working on acquiring a Lumberjack. I prefer the slimness and durability of the Alox scales. The tool selection on the Soldier is nearly perfect for me. I'd rather have a small wharncliffe blade instead of an awl though.

Definitly the trekker over the farmer. Only because the one handed opening on it. try looking at wenger ranger series SAK

There's nothing at all wrong with the slimmer SAKs. I edc a Pioneer Settler or a Bantam II to work most days for cutting boxes and things. Both are just alox scales and a large and a small blade.

The Pioneer Apprentice is pretty cool too.

Compact variants are cool.

Pioneers carry very nicely with pocket clip.

Copper Cadets are flat and have a handy array of tools.

I also have a Nomad and like it a lot. It is flat and carries nicely in my back pocket next to my wallet. Sadly no pics of it at the moment. The 108mm Solos are pretty slick also. Just one big blade, nice big read handles and a strong backspring.

I'm with the above either the alox soldier or the alox farmer, you can't go wrong.

The clip and screws came from www.knifekits.com. Bill Evans aka Scibeer put it on for me. I just recently had him put a clip just like it on an Electrician Plus (which has been getting carried a lot ever since it arrived).

I actually bought the regular Trekker because I didn't like the serrated blade on the one handed version. Lose the serrations and I would have bought the one handed opener.

I am thinking about picking out a new SAK to carry.

Is it blasphemy to get a SAK without all the gee whiz tools.

I am not going to use <snip> the screw drivers ( I have a nice leatherman already, that I EDC)

I'm not sure I follow your logic. You seem to want "all the gee whiz tools" but you're not going to use the screwdrivers and you already carry a Leatherman every day?

Incidentally, I don't know what you consider "gee whiz tools," but I definitely don't think it's blasphemy to get a SAK with fewer tools. There are lots of devotees around here of the "minimalist SAK" - in other words, Swiss Army knives with only what the carrier deems the most-basic of tools (for instance, one might prefer at Tinker to a Super Champ).

Lastly, I think you ought to check out a Victorinox Rucksack.

My personal favorite, in part because it has the phillips that extends out 180 degrees for good reach:

Explorer.

I don't think that there is anything wrong with carrying a slim SAK without all the bells and whistles. I have a Champion (Champ with out the pliers) that sits like a brick in my pocket. No thanks. Like others have stated, I like the farmer and soldier in alox.

However, I have recently found myself gravitating to either the Climber or standard Fireman depending on what I'm doing. As an EDC, the Climber with its Spartan + scissors set up is great. All the tools I need at home or around the office are in one very pocket-friendly package.

The Fireman is a great hiking/camping folder. I love the locking blade (non OH because i don't like the serrations on such soft steel). The saw is longer than on a standard SAK as well. The dedicated serrated blade is great for rope or cord, and the can and bottle openers (along with their screwdrivers) are perfect for camp cooking and drinking. Also, like the Climber, it has a corkscrew. As an avid wine drinker that has been caught one too many times without a corkscrew...I simply won't leave home without one;)

Good luck!

I've had a super tinker and a classic forever ,and just aquired an Outrider and I love it.

I sounds like your minimalist Vic SAK Tinker already meets your requirements. It's thin so it's good for poket carry. If you need sissors get a Vic SAK Compact, if a saw is required then get a Vic SAK Farmer. If you need a small blade and saw a Vic SAK Hiker or Camper will serve you well.

Good Luck!:)
