SAK classic for PSK or razor blade and tweezers

Razorblade and good tweezers? I don't have room for much else. (I also have a scalpel blade... which will stay in with either option most likely)

I'm asking from my other post on my mini-psk in an altoid tin.

I know the classic is multi-function, but for some reasons I'm leaning away from it. Opinions? I like that it comes with scissors, but is the knife any better than a large contractor razor blade?

If knowing my other contents is important in your decision making process: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=516245

The edge of the Classic's nailfile can be "squared off" with a diamond stone or similar making a good ferro rod scraper (if you will be including a ferro rod). To save space, the scales can be popped off and the tweezers stored separately. I saw where someone had taken the Classic apart and used the scissors, blade and file as separate tools allowing them to be stashed wherever there was a little room in the kit - of course this makes them smaller to hold when using as there is no longer a "handle".

There are also other models of similar size, maybe a bit thicker, that have different/additional tools.

I like the "multi" use idea and I'm pretty partial to the SAK, so maybe I am biased. :) Take with a grain of salt...

It seems that if I am going to take it apart, I'd rather just have really good tweezers that aren't much bigger, and a razor blade. I think I'm going to play around with working with some wood today with a razor blade and see how it performs.

SAK hands down. It even comes with its own handle.

What reasons would you chose it for over the razor blade though? Just that it has a handle? Or do you think that the smaller blade would perform better?

I don't understan why a sak classic or razor blade would be in a PSK. Not trying to be funny or smart a$$, but if you put you pants on in the morning, would'nt a good pocket knife or two be in the pocket?

The PSK is a good idea, but there are certain things that should ALWAYS be in you pants pockets no matter where you are, with the exeption of airlines or courthouse. What if you get seperated from the pack or where ever you have your PSK stashed?

Could someone point out to me why a second small sak has to be in the PSK if you have a tinker or cadet II in your pocket on a lanyard?

For the room of a classic, I'd rather have a second mini-bic or firesteel. Put the classic on your keyring, and hang a Buck Hartsook around your neck under your shirt.

Jackknife, I agree with you completely. But, I'd like some blade option as a complete last resort. When canoeing, I have a good knife by my side, as well as a rescue knife on my pfd.

I was just curious of the best option for an absolute backup option. So, if you lost all your stuff, your pants, your neck knife, and your psk was in your shirt pocket, what blade would you want as a last backup that is super-minimalist.

Likelyhood of ever using the blade? 0.1%, but why not?

How long does a razor blade stay sharp? Not very.

How easy is it to hold one without cutting yourself? Again, not very. Add cold fingers to that and my point is made clearer.

I want a KNIFE, just just some sharp edge that's difficult to hold without risking needless injury. AND it also has scissors, a nailfile/screwdriver, tweezers and a toothpick, make it clearly the superior choice.

I agree with David E.

Razor blade out of the package is extremely sharp and not easy to hold on to. So you can take a survival scenerio and make it much worse. Classic SAK has to be the winner here. IMHO

I recommend a Buck Solo. I you absolutely can't fit anything bigger, one of those gas station key-chain lock-backs or a Leatherman Micra would also be a good idea.

Here's mine. It lives in an Altoids tin, that lives in the sheath of my Becker 7. The Potable Aqua tabs are gone, replaced by a few of the Katadyn MP1 purification tablets. The meds are now Advil, Imodium AD and Benedryl. I added a small gold treble hook and a black ant fly. I removed the wire and replaced it with 30' of 50# spyderwire. Guess I should update the photo as this one is pretty old.

I've had a few SAK's, and I've always hated the tweezers, and I love my really good "tick" tweezers. That's why I'm having trouble deciding. I'm looking at some other options.

Well my wife occasionally uses the tweezers on her pink Classic SD to pluck her eyebrows(although she'd kill me if I let this information out) and I've used them for splinters to good ends and picking out bits of pocket lint and such that get caught inside my SAKs.
Then again, tweezers aren't exactly high tech gear, most all of them work as intended unless the points are just too large and rounded to be of any use, which the Victorinox tweezers are all thin and small enough for splinter duty. I'd say a Vic classic is a good addition to a PSK for size .vs. utility. Others may argue, "Well what's the point of redundant in blades? You should have your EDC/belt knife/etc. in your pocket." or that "That's just being excessively paranoid or is taking up space".
The same could be said of multiple means of fire, and the entire PSK for that matter, but we still carry them, and once they're needed it's no longer paranoia, it's preparedness.

I've removed many a splinter with the SAK tweezers.

Another task I've used them for is to remove a quarter from the gumball machine slot. It didn't turn and the guy who put the quarter in had no way to pluck it out.

I'm up $1.75 so far !!

:D

Of the two you mention I'd probably go with the SAK. That said, I have a Spyderco Byrd Finch that divides its time between my keychain and my altoids tin PSK. It is nice and flat and has no clip, so it doesn't take up much room at all. I'm very happy with it and I'll probably pick up another one so it can be both places at once.
