SAK, don't leave home without it.

Every time I plan to leave the house I look at the many knives sitting on top of my dresser and decide what to carry. Lately I have been trying to get different knives into the rotation but I always feel that I must carry my Vic Compact because something will come up. The Compact is my favorite SAK and probably my favorite knife overall.

Last month at my nephew's 1st birthday my sister needed Sterno cans popped open (like the top of a paint can) for the buffet trays and asked if I had a knife. I had my Compact with me so I pried open the cans with the combo tool.

I am not a wine drinker but I have a few bottles of wine in the fridge that were given to me as gifts months ago. A few weeks ago I was having spagetti for dinner so I said what the hell and opened up a bottle of red wine with the corkscrew on my Compact. It was actually the first wine bottle I had ever opened. I am mainly a beer drinker. Speaking of beer...

My boss gave me a Hickory Farms gift pack that had cheese and summer sausage, my co-worker gave me a case of Samuel Adams holiday brew. Once I got home I sat in front of the TV pulled out the Compact, popped open a beer and cut a few slices of sausage and cheese.

One of the production floor workstation PC's needed to be rebooted. The CPU was in a computer cabinet with a type of lock found on electrical panels that requires a big skeleton key. My co-worker said he would go look for a production mechanic or an IT tech with a key or screwdriver. I told him to wait a bit and I tried the combo tool. Popped right open.

My brother got a Mini Cooper radio control car for Christmas. The car was screwed on a cardboard insert in the box with a tiny phillips screw. I handed him the eyeglass screwdriver from the Compact and it did the job perfectly.

For Christmas I gave my mom a wall clock that has small 2"x3" and 2"x2" picture frames in place of the clock numbers. I have a digital camera and HP photo printer so I decided to print up some family photos and put them in the frames. My printer uses 4"x6" photo paper so once again I pulled out the Compact and used the scissors to trim the photos down to the right size. My sister saw me cutting photos with the SAK and told Mom I needed to borrow full size scissors. I said I didn't need to borrow full size scissors because the SAK scissors were perfect for what I was doing.

For New Years Eve I had dinner with my family and we had Martinelli's Sparkling Cider to celebrate. "Steve do you have your knife?" Out came the SAK, off came the bottle caps.

Don't get me wrong I love my assisted openers, lockbacks, liner locks, traditional pattern slipjoints, and tactical folders but the SAK is just so damn handy. I still carry a clipped locking folder in addition to my SAK but lately I'm not sure why. The SAK does everything a "regular" knife can do and then some.

I agree 100%. Only I EDC a Victorinox Spartan instead of a Compact. Some time ago at work I used the Spartan to open a computer, replace a CD-ROM drive and to unscrew the bottom plate of the drive. The Spartan handled three different sizes of phillips screws with ease. I used the small blade to cut a tie wrap and the tweezers to remove some dust from the inside of an older model computer mouse.

I like other knives too, but a SAK can do so much more. I stopped carrying an additional folder some months ago and only carry the SAK.

I came to that point some years ago. I started to wonder why I had all these folders I was not carrying anymore. I started to carry just sak's as an EDC, exept when out in the woods, or such, then I have a sheath knife on my belt. Exept for different size Opinels, I don't even own any locking folders anymore. Made my kids and nephews happy, when I gave them all my "other" folding knives.

What is a combo tool?

The combo tool is the bottle/ can opener on the SAK. It can also be used as a wire stripper (that little notch on the bottom) or a flathead screwdriver.

And I agree, I only carry a SAK now. Mind you, the SAK I carry is the mighty Hercules because of the pliers when I travel.

I would probably carry one of my SAKs more often, but I need a decent long nosed pliers so I carry a Leatherman or similar multitool daily. I sometimes like to carry a basic SAK in addition because the rounded bolsters feel right at home in my pocket and the main blade is so easy to open.

You just can't go wrong with a Victorinox - I've carried various models for years. As a boy I used to wear a classic around my neck on a necklace made of parachute cord. One of the toughest choices I make on a daily basis is should I carry the soldier or super tinker?? I need more pockets! Combine a Victorinox with a good multi tool on the belt and there's not much you can't fix!

I've come to this conclusion as well. My EDC is a small tinker. Its the same size as the compact at two layers and 3.250" long. I found I couldn't use the can opener for a screwdriver very many places on the backs of computers and equipment racks until I reshaped it with a dremel. Now I've got a screw driver for slotted and phillips that I can use anywhere. The tip of the can opener is as "at home" with phillips as it is with slotted screws.

I've been wanting to ask this question to slip-joint users in a different thread but will ask now:

Question: Why would someone choose a non-SAK slip-joint for EDC?

I like stockman's and trappers and barlows very much. And I tend to miss them not being in my EDC rotation anymore. But I can't justify it because I know I'm going to need my SAK throughout the day and don't want to be caught without it.

What do you guys say?

Some people dont need screwdrivers and corksrews on a daily basis, so a SAK is not needed.

The Compact is 2 layers and 3.5" (91mm) long. I also have a Spartan and Tinker but prefer the compact because of the scissors. It comes in handy in the office or when I am trimming photos. I have a 1 year old nephew and a 6 month old niece so I print a lot of photos for grandma.

There are a lot of slip joint users out there that have never tried a SAK. I recently gave my next door neighbor a Wenger Highlander to thank him for letting me hunt on his land. He's about 50 years old and the outdoor type, but he said that he had never owned a SAK before. A week later he came over to help me install a bathroom sink and was using the Wenger right and left. Looks like we got another convert :) .

Who cares if you can't justify it? Carry whatever pleases you and won't tear holes in your pockets.

I carry what makes me happy. Most of the time, I carry an assortment of knives. I carry a Victorinox CyberTool 41 on my belt.

For quick deployment, I carry a Vic MiniChamp in the watch/change pocket of my bluejeans. In the same pocket I also carry a Spyderco Jester attached to a Doug Ritter Photon Freedom Micro Covert. Why? Why not. I like both knives and don't like choosing between them.

To finish off my EDC, I carry a BladeTech Mouse Lite clipped to the inside of my rear pocket.

I must admit, however, same as you, that while I own a number of Schrade folders, I never carry them anymore. My SAKs are far more versatile.

Some people, like me, may carry a SAK but will also carry a traditional slipjoint for a larger, or differently shaped, blade. I've carried SAK's along with other slipjoints (wharncliff blades, 4 inch trappers, whittlers, etc) for versatility. E.g. I may use one for whittling and the other for food prep.

I also carry a SAK (recruit) tucked away in my jacket pocket and a slippy in my pants pocket. But unlike yourself I carry the slippy to have something *smaller*. I work in a public high school so I need something small like a mini toothpick, peanut or stockman. I've found that they are also comfortable to carry.

I got a Swisscard Lite for Christmas. So, whenever I leave the house with my wallet, a multitool goes by default. Works for me.

I too think the Compact is the best SAK for EDC.I also carry a Kershaw Whiskey Gap at weekends as I love that knife. When I go on holidays I find the Explorer perfect as it is not 'too' big!
I only buy Victorinox and Kershaw these days!
Long live them both!

I currently EDC a Sportsman, but I have been eyeing the Compact. I currently also EDC a Juice S2, but I prefer the SAK scissors - the weakness may be the spring but I find they cut much better than Leathermans do. But I want a philips screwdriver too.

The Explorer is my favourite SAK, but too big for what I want for EDC. What I would like is the Yeoman which is a cross between the Compact and the old Scientist. It is a smaller Explorer Plus with the combo tool. However, they appear to have replaced this model with what is an Explorer with the Yeoman badge on it although pictures on the website still show the old model:

I have tried to order it but recieved the "Explorer" and sent it back. Anyone know where I can get one?

I've often wondered where to find a Yeoman as well. I've searched many places but I cannot seem to find them anywhere. I noticed many of the new "Yeomans" are labeled with the model number 55781. Does any one know the actual number? Anyone know where to get one?
