SAK, don't leave home without it.

Hmmm.. If the original Yoeman was such a hot item, how come Victorinox discontinued / replaced the model? It is nice, compact and has all the "urban tools" one needs. I sure would have bought one right away, without hesitation / second thoughts. That is, if they were still available.

Most will say it is a stripped down Explorer, but to me, it looks to me more like a thicker Compact. But I sure am more comfortable with a proper Philips head. The magnifying lens can't hurt either. I'm actually thinking of replacing my current EDC (a Deluxe Tinker) with a Compact right now, if I get a positive sign from the SAK gods. =)

I don't always EDC a SAK, but I'm never too far away from one either.
I usually keep my StayGlow Fieldmaster in the truck (I switched the scales with my StayGlow Climber:D ), and I keep a Super Tinker in the medicine cabinet, and the Climber is in one of the kitchen drawers.

I usually carry either a small Sebenza or Calypso Jr with me, but the Swisschamp gets 99% of the cutting duty. It's the knife I use whenever I'm not alone, and of course, the corkscrew gets used intensively. In fact the corkscrew has developped an impressive amount of play. I'll have to send it back someday, but will have to buy another SAK first, as I'm sure I can't spend 24 straight hours with a SAK;)

I also have a compact, but I'm not sure if it's the best or not. I bought it when I was 12, I vaugly remember looking around at the other knives at the store, but I don't know what made me get the compact.

Does anyone know what the muti purpose hook is supposed to do? I haven't found a single purpose for it. I read a description that said it's a parcel carrier... what's a parcel?

I'm thinking about buying a one handed trekker, but I'm torn between the black bladed and non black bladed version.

Some things, like a stack of papers, a bale of straw or some boxes come secured with string or wire. The hook allows you to pick up the "parcel" by the string/wire without hurting your fingers. It works well, I've used mine a few times.

Thanks to this thread, I pulled out my SAK Compact and have been using it over the last few days. Small with all the tools I'd want for regular edc, this one may replace my current SAK edc, a Handyman. Guess I'd better buy a couple more before Vic disco's them

I've been EDCing a Compact for several days now, and it is great for my purposes. I do find that the combo-tool on the Compact is a little thin and "flexy" for me. Since it is on the same backspring as the master blade, I expected the thinner profile, but not as thin as when I finally saw it. Maybe I'm just used to the thickness of the regular can-opener on my Deluxe Tinker. =) Also, is the can-opener blade on the bottom side of the combo-tool really not beveled / sharpened? I remember seeing some GAKS before with the combo-tool at the tip of the saw, and observed that the can opener had a sharp / beveled edge. =)

Also, while the combo-tool "point" can indeed turn PH screws, it becomes cumbersome/awkward when unscrewing a long shafted Phillips screw. =\ But anyway, this is no problem to me since my back-up EDC is a Vic STX. =)

I have not found a use for the hook other than the top portion that is a nail file. Even still it does a lousy job of filing nails. I'm always on the look out for a hook use opportunity though. :)

In Europe, the hook is used to carry "parcels," which are tied with twine. It is sometimes referred to as a "parcel carrier." The hook is also used to tie the twine in a knot once it is wound around the parcel. As the SAK is of European origin, one must look overseas to solve some of the tools' uses.

I know what Victorinox says the hook is for, I just haven't run into many string tied parcels where I'm from. And in the 4 years I spent living in Europe I don't recall seeing many string tied parcels there either. If I do find a use for the hook it will likely not be to carry parcels.

I use the hook quite frequently when the kids go ice skating......great for pulling the laces tight!

I once heard an interesting use for the hook on an SAK. Someone had dropped a small item down a storm drain. It was retrieved by tying a cord to an SAK and lowering the SAK into the storm drain with its hook open. The SAK's hook was then used to "fish" for the item and retrieve it.
