SAK economy models?

I have tried to locate a web link for them a few times with no luck (they were on sale in several retail places around here during the holidays). Check with felinevet, he often has models that others don't.

I just picked up one of these "economy" Victorinox Sportsman II knives. The handles and main blade are a bit smaller than that of my Victorinox Tinker, in fact it's smaller than my Wengers as well, but the quality/fit & finish is what one would expect from Victorinox. The handle scales look a bit pedestrian due to the hot stamped shield logo, but I kinda like the feel of the nylon scales over the cellidor ones. Makes me wish Victorinox would switch all the current cellidor models over to nylon (but keep the metal shield inlay). My sample has the older tang stamp with the "Switzerland Stainless Rostfrei" and the crossbow logo over "Officier Suisse" so I assume newer ones will have the "Swiss Made" tang stamp without the crossbow logo. The Sportman II's size compared to standard SAK's like the Spartan and Tinker make it a bit more pocket friendly in my opinion and it's so lightweight you'd probably forget it was in your pocket. About the only negative thing I can see is that the silver paint on the shield logo will eventually wear off the scales leaving the imprint of the stamp, but you could probably go to some arts/crafts shop and find some silver marker or paint to fill it in. For the price $9-$12 they usually sell for, the Sportsman II is alot of knife for the money.

Superchunk,

Is the sportsman II's blade smaller than the spartan's? Just curious. Is it the same size as the waiter?

thanks

Hi Ultraman,

Yes, the Sportsman II's blade is a little smaller than the Spartan's. In fact, the Sportsman II is exactly the size of the Waiter and Tourist (smaller version of the Spartan). Keep in mind that the basic Sportsman with cellidor scales is a smaller model: 84 mm/3 1/4 inches compared to the Spartan and Tinker which measure at 91 mm/3 1/2 inches. The Sportsman II is essentially the Sportsman except with nylon scales and a lower price tag.
