I was wondering if any body knew of a SAK getting sold with a firesteel as part of the knife. In some of my readings,I have seen it mentioned ,but never with a model name. Also, does anybody know of any modifications to SAK,that allow firemaking. I have seen one in a knife magazine article written by John Larsen and would appreciate details, such as where do you buy flints/ferrocerrium,what kind of glue was used etc.? Thanks

I have read somewhere on the forum about how to disassemble your SAK and remove/add different functions to make a custom.

Just a though if you glue the ferro rod to your knife you will need something to strike it with... Another knife maybe?

You can buy 1/8 diameter ferro rods from Hoods Woods.

I found it easier to hang a small ferro rod off of the keychain ring on my SAKs. It keeps the ferro rod with my knife and I can use the knife as a striker.

Thanks for the speedy replies. BrettP,I ALWAYS carry at least two knives, one of which is a SAK explorer and if need be,you can use the tweezers to strike with. Longbow 50 what kind of ferro rod is that and ,of course, where did you get it? It is much smaller and trimmer than the ones I have seen.

flnder, that is a Boy Scouts of America Hotspark. I traveled to the next town and visited the scout shop/headquarters they have there. You can also get them online. Cost is still under $3.00 each I think.

I have found that Hotsparks can often be out of stock at Scout shops. If you can not find them locally you can order them directly from BSA now for $2.40 each [last time I checked they did not offer online ordering]. Shipping in the USA is $5.50 for orders up to $50 so order several and they are still a good bargain. Stash one in each of your packs, in your BOB, hang one on your key ring and SAK, and give a couple away to your buds.

Oops, I forgot to add the link. :o

Thanks for posting the link. I'm needing to replace a couple and the shipping is less than I'd spend in cash to drive to get them.;)
