SAK for an 18 y/o Birthday gift?

I agree with many of the others who have suggested either a Pioneer, Farmer or an Electrician. Personally I would go with either the Pioneer or the Electrician. Both are a little more " pocket friendly" and they both have a great combo of essential tools. The Farmer is a little wider with the addition of the saw, so a little bulkier than the other two.

Have you considered the Marbles rendition of the Camillus "Demo" knife? Spear point main, flathead screwdriver/cap lifter, can opener, a punch/awl, and a bail.
100% stainless steel, so it weighs a tad more than a SAK, though.
I have both the original Camillus, and the Marbles. The Marbles is as good as or better than the original. Under $10, too.
Pair it up with a Rough Rider large Stockman, and you'll still have enough left over for a Big Mac or something.

I checked out the Farmer. But I'd bet he would like something with a scissors. Suggestions?

Since you looked at the Farmer and think he might want a knife with scissors, I'd suggest the Pioneer X. I don't recall how much I paid for mine exactly but I think it was around $30. I remember when the red alox Farmers were $16 shipped back before they set a MAP.

Thanks for the suggestions! I can easy see how SAK's are an addiction all their own. I've been carrying an alox Cadet to church for a few years now. Sweet knife, carries easy.

I'm gonna check out both the Farmer and Pioneer X.

The first knife I ever bought was a Victorinox pocket pal swiss army knife with just two blades in a slim package. Red all metal smooth covers. I had to go bring my mom over to the sporting goods counter to get them to take my money for it. I must have been 10-12 years old. I had only had a small pen knife from my Grandfather before that and always had issues opening it. So it was my first real knife. That was a long time ago since I am 54 now ;) Never gave up the love for knives.

Again I totally agree with one of the Alox models as a good choice...

Allow me to cast a dissenting vote: Get the lad a Super Tinker. Tough as nails, includes the tweezers (which you lose with alox), and more comfortable to hold in hand during cold weather.

Anything Alox, many good suggestions, so I wont repeat. Find the one with the tools he will use that is in your budget

Got a pioneer for my birthday, not sure which one, but around 18. Still have it 33 years later.

I'd get him the 111mm Centurion. Basic two layer SAK and good size for serious cutting outdoors or when he's working construction.

I bought a SAK Camper from Fred Meyer for $24.99, full price and way too much but I saw it and had to have it. Don't regret it one bit. It has everything an 18 year old kid could need

EDIT: Amazon has red ones for $19. Now I'm of the opinion that if you're old enough to die for your country, you're old enough to drink a beer, so use the other $11 to buy a nice 6 pack of craft brews to split with the kid and show him how to use that bottle opener

SAKs are perfect gifts. Only problem is, most people are good with just one. They don't understand all the different tools. I gave an electrician to my cousin's husband, who is an electrician. Gave classics to all of my sisters and female cousins. I've given red or black handle SAKs, various designs, to my brother, brother in law, future brother in law, my baby sisters boyfriend, male cousins, friends etc. Only my brother in law is a knife nut, but moreso Buck knives.

Everyone needs a SAK at some time or another.

I have a black alox pioneer, a blue alox farmer and just bought a green alox farmer and green alox cadet. The cadet will probably be gifted, but that green farmer is staying in the pockets.

UPDATE:

I scored him an alox Farmer. The Pioneer X and that were a buck apart, both free shipping. But I figured he'd use the saw on the farmer quicker than the scissors on the Pioneer, so we went with the Farmer. Hope to have it by week's end.
