My first S&W, I scrimped and saved for her. IIRC I doled out $168.00 for her brand spankin' new. That was pretty dear to me at the time, as I had 2 little ones to feed and clothe. She's been shot a heck'uva lot as 22 ammo was/is cheap:D The trigger was as advertised like "A breaking glass rod". She's way slicker now though. I have alot of fond memories with this plinker, all my sons learned on her when they were younger, and my grand kids are now learning the basics with her.

S&W 6" K-22

Hi Ken -

Awesome SAK!

My first shooting experience was at my Uncle Ross's house near Carbondale Illinois. Uncle Ross was a coal miner and avid sportsman.

My family was down visiting and uncle Ross took us out to a field on his property where he has a skeet throwing machine set up.

He let me shoot his Beretta over and under (I do not recall the model) at some clay targets.

I was about 13 years old, and had only fired a 22 rifle in Boy Scouts, so this was quite a piece of weaponry! Of course I remember I did not want to look like a little guy to my Uncle and cousins.

I did ok - hit a few, missed a few and uncle Ross was very cool about the whole thing.

I remember the gun had a recoil pad of some sort, but the next day I had the tell-tale yellowish bruise on my right shoulder lol ......

So to all you uncles out there - kids remember this kind of "man-building" experience! Take a kid shooting!

Today I own many firearms, but a couple of my favorites are my grandmother's "bar" gun, an old S&W .38 special, and my Magnum 500.

best regards

No great childhood shooting stories here, and I've never fired a S&W. But I did work as a firearms instructor at Philmont for five of my ten years there, three at the 30.06 range and two at the .12 range. Always fun to watch the first-time shooters, especially the foreign scouts that didn't speak English. :D

When i was 16 my family and i went down to florida and we went to a shooting range and i got to fire the pistol that has now become my favorite. I fired a Sig Sauer p226 as well as p239 and glock 19. i also used to go to the range by me here in macomb where i got to shoot my brothers r700 and ar-15. i hope to one day get a p226 as soon as i turn 21 :) im not goin out drinking! im going out shooting!

I'll "take a shot" (no pun intended) at this one . . .

My son has been going to the shooting range with me for a couple of years now, and usually shoots his Red Ryder BB gun. One day he walked up to a table next to us, and asked to shoot their .22. I think he hit about half of the targets, and surprised all of us. He did so well, and minded the rules so well too, that the guys there let him shoot the 10/.22 for about twenty more minutes, reloading magazines for him, because they were so impressed at how well he conducted himself. (Scouting pays off, ya'll. ;) ) We all ended up passing around & shooting everything we had.

He later wanted to shoot my Ruger SB .44, so I put light wadcutter targets loads in it. He shot it pretty well, with me helping of course, and he hit the target four out of six shots, at 20 yards - this is an eight-year-old, shooting a full-size magnum-framed .44. (I had to help him hold it.)

His words: "I like the long one (the 10/.22) better. I can see what I hit."

I was sure proud of him that day.

ps - Perfessr - I have that exact knife, on of the best S&W's I own. I think D. Ralph designed it.

My first shooting when I was 14 and in OTC.
I was on a 100 yard range shooting 303 Lee Enfields,
Each the recoil from each shot pushed me back in the gravel a good couple of inches and took off the skin from my elbows.
(I had Marksman 1st Class by 16)

My Dad started teaching me to shoot when I was 11 or 12. He kept several farmers' fields clear of rodents, and was a great aerial shot, ducks, clays, and 2" blocks of wood with a pistol! Never could get the hang of those darn blocks of wood!
But he taught me technique, and I won a lot of trophies punching paper with a S&W .22 pistol, and shootin' steel with my S&W .44.
The varmint hunting made me into a decent long-range rifle shooter also.
He was a great teacher.
Thanks for the opportunity, Ken!

One of the girls I work with (who's also a good friend of mine) told me that she thought she was afraid of guns because she didn't know how to handle them properly. So we made a deal, I'm teaching her how to shoot and she's teaching me how to ride a bike (hey, I've always had horses, so bikes made no sense!).

Here she is, holding my favourite .22, a S&W 617.

Got my first 22 at 12 years old from my older brother, our Dad had died when I was 6, so my big brother gave me his 22 at the same age Dad gave it to him. I still have it and have loved target practicing with it, shooting thousands of rounds in a year, (when they were cheap) Now not so much, not many places around to do it.

Thanks Ken for the chance,
Jim

Couldn't have gone to a better guy. Congrats to you both!!!:cool:

I love a S&W model 19. When I was burglarized and had my Ruger GP100 stolen my uncle was nice enough to loan me his 6" model 19 until I could acquire another weapon.

Learned to shoot handguns at college with Smiths too.

Around Christmas time I was able to purchase a 4" Model 19 .357, love the guns!

Thanks for the chance!
