SAK- Ideal number of layers?

Two layers is about my limit for pocket carry . The four layer fieldmaster is my choice for edc and it lives in a nylon belt sheath .

I find that 40 some odd layers, tends to be a bit much for pocket carry.

You're not trying hard enough. ;)

But actually I've carried a Champion or Swiss Champ in the pocket virtually for 20 years, until just switching to a Stayglow Hiker.

Fickle, eh? ;) Out of curiosity, why the switch?

Cardimon,

Why the switch? I guess this has been mentioned on just about every gadget/doodad/flashlight/knife/gun type forum; evaluating one's EDC requirements. When I started EDCing SAKs about 20 some odd years ago, I chose a Champion due to me being a farming boy, hunter, fisher and just plain 'ol working folk. But as I've gotten older and changed careers, I just find that I don't have a need to tote all those tools around all the time.

About 2 months ago, I wrote down what tools I "actually" used versus what I "think I may use" and found out what I really needed. The hiker fit the bill, as I always carry a SAK with a woodsaw. Now I'm not knocking any other model, as each one has a purpose for me, just the hiker is my flavor for EDC currently.

Fickle? Yes, I often can't find which one I want to carry versus what I think I need to carry. My wife is always wondering why I need to own a hundred plus SAKs. :D

I have never actually found the number of layers all that important. I've used a belt pouch for ages, so weight and bulk are secondary to function. I have EDCed everything from a 3-layer Super Tinker up to a 10-layer SwissChamp XLT without any problem.

My current choice is hovering in the 4- to 6-layer range between the Deluxe Tinker and the Craftsman.

Four layers seems to be the ideal for me in 84mm and 91mm SAKs, like the VIctorinox Huntman and Wenger Sécurité 17 which are two of my favourite EDC SAKs. I carry larger ones sometimes, but they tend to ride in a belt sheath.

In 111mm and 120mm models, my limit is three layers, like the Victorinox Hunter or OH-Trekker (with a plain edge, of course).

3 for me. The Hiker does everything I want it to. At work I carry an Electrician Plus. I've used every tool on both of them(oops, except the Hiker's awl), but never felt a need for more.

Max. two layers for me, please. I find it more convenient to add more knives/tools in other pockets or other appropriate locations than to increase the size of one tool. Tinker and Soldier are my favorites, there's nothing I miss having when carrying either of them.

Cheers,
-Mikko-

I take my words back  Just got a Cybertool 29 today and it will be my new EDC. It's just such a perfectly useful thing that the added bulk doesn't bother me at all. Four layers has never seemed thinner :p Will get a belt sheath though. Wouldn't want to scratch the pretty thing.

Cheers,
-Mikko-

If it's not in a sheath, five layers like my huntsman lite. I used to try carrying my cybertool but it was just too bulky. In a sheath it makes no difference.

truesteel.
