I have a Vic Huntsman that I like a lot. I'm looking for simple instructions on how best to clean, lube and sharpen. I emphasize the word simple as I'm not into advanced sharpening techniques. Thanks in advance.

you would probably do better with this over in the toolshed forum under the general heading.

This thread from the multitool forum has some good info. In a nutshell, you need to be careful about what chemicals you use because of the cellidor scales, but generally speaking, the stainless steel and aluminum construction makes SAKs very forgiving of various cleaning techniques.

Of course, whatever you do, make sure you lubricate after you've cleaned. I like food-grade mineral oil.

I generally just wash my SAK's in warm soapy water. I clean the crud out with paper towels and toothpicks that may be inside the knives. For oil I use a little mineral oil on the pivots. A simple stone, like a medium Arkansas stone and some practice can maintain the edge as well as any thing els if you take the time to learn. Good luck, Joe

Hot tap water and a bit of dish detergent followed by a through hot water rinse should do the trick…if not try some WD40 (contains a mild solvent, followed by a repeat of the hot water/detergent treatment to get rid of the WD40 smell. For lubrication, use a touch of mineral oil (sold in pharmacies).

The easiest/most effective way to sharpen without a lot of practice and skill that I know of is the Spyderco SharpMaker.

If you use water, be sure to dry it out completely by baking it in the sun, placing it in front of a fan, etc. I have run multitools (not SAKs) through the dishwasher too, and its pretty effective.

In lieu of water, you can blast the nooks and crannies with compressed air, or get in there with a CLP or other light oil and a q-tip, etc.

right on

haha, you can maintness them :D

Honestly, I dont take any care of my SAK's, once in a while Ill shapen it wipe the blade and clean the lint from the cork screw slot. :D

You know what I found is awesome for brushing out a SAK if you don't have compressed air - one of those brushes that come with hair trimmers, shavers, etc.

Every few months or if it gets really gunky I'll soak it in hot dish-soapy water and rinse it in hot water and let it dry.

Dishwasher with all the tools open for 15 minutes.

Rinse under hot tap water, air dry and oil.

It dont get any easier.

SAKs sharpen very nicely with the red plastic/ceramic rod Rappala pocket sharpeners. Just pull the blade through the vee. They are about $4.00 alone or you can get a fishing knife and one for ~ $10.00 at Le' Target'...

Yeah, the simple V sharpeners, if not perfect, certainly do the job. I have a Gatco ceramic rod X type of sharpenerm, but I usually just strop them on 600 grit W/D paper in the field.

i sharpen mine on a spyderco sharpmaker ceramic v rod. i clean it in the sink using dishwashing liquid and an old toothbrush. dry it with a paper towel and lube it a good gun oil like hoppes oil in the orange bottle or rem oil works well.,,VWB,
