SAK: Mini Champ Alox vs Executive

Well Nascar, I guess I'm with you, ended up selling my Alox MiniChamp to a fellow at work, as I couldn't last long without my Executive either ;) but I will say it's a capable knife, just for me the Executive wins this match...

The Mini Champ has too many tools I would never use, thus violating the Powernoodle Protocol (maximum utility and minimal size). Orange peeler - seriously? Extra blade? Cuticle pusher? Yikes. Fingernail dirt digger? By the time I remove all of the goofy (for me) tools, I'm left with a Rambler or Manager.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm thinking the Vix Champ XAVT might not be something you've been thinking about?:D

I don't mind big MTs or SAKs, as long as the utility to size ratio is groovy. But its really the smaller SAKs like Mr. Gary is talking about that have the best utility to size ratio.

haha that XAVT is a mighty knife for sure! a manufacturing marvel, but one that does seem impractical for daily carry, now, if it had a small wheel at the base to help pull it around with, might be something worth checking out ;)

and Pn, haven't tried any other SAK's smaller than the Executive but might start checking some out.

Yes, I have to agree that is why I can't find the interest to try a mini champ. Powernoodle may call it the maximum utility and minimal size, but I call it the maximum minimalism. The mini champ just has too many tools/blades I just can't justify having. Classic, rambler, manager, I can see. The mini champ needs to loose weight. :)

For myself anyway - the Minichamp wins over the Rambler mainly cause of the added blade. And it's thickness and weight difference as compared to the Rambler is minimal. I've found that now and then I'm trying to mess with something and have used those extra tools for little jobs other than the named purpose. I don't carry mine on my keys though as I keep it clipped to a Peak Eiger AAA light with one of those little carabiner deals so I can unclip them from each other easily if I desire. With the Minichamp and an Electrician, I have 4 blades from small to large in an overall small package.

But - everyone has their favorites that work for them. The Rambler, and the Executive, are both fine knives in their own right.

The variation of SAK models makes it pretty easy to get yourself equipped just how you like.

One of my frequently carried combinations I've set up. Syph modded the old Elinox to give me the pen blade. And I'll trade off between the cellidor or alox Minichamp.

Thanks SAK Guy but I know you've similar setups as well and a nice Vic collection too! :)

This forum is killing me. First I was into modern folders. Said I would get a couple of Chris Reeve knives then stop. Then I started lurking on the traditional section and ended up buying those. Then I saw members posting pics of their SAKs. Just pulled the trigger on a yellow minichamp. Awesome!!!

Nice and yes, we've always been enablers, something about misery loves company ;) or something along those lines ...

I have a regular (non alox) MInichamp and it's probably my least favoured SAK. I have an alox Classic SD on my keychain which gets used daily so not a size issue.
I think what bugs me about the Minichamp is the low value per layer sort of feel. The cuticle pusher as a non-useful tool, well only one purpose (YMMV). And the screwdriver/ruler feels low utility and ditto the orange peeler. Also never quite bought the two blades thing.
Maybe I need and Executive, maybe I should try the mini champ as EDC, maybe I should spring for the alox minichamp:-)
