SAK mod... way over due!

hey all,

one thing that has always pissed me off about the SAK knives, is that pesky little key ring attachment that is attached to the end of the SAK... so, last night, i did something about it.

i took my dremel, and a grinding head... and i took it right off. tested it on my wen handyman and it worked great. i slipped a little and hit the handle, but nothing bad.

now i need to do my vic huntsman lite, and a wen classic and i've improved them all!

I like the keyrings. I attach a thin metal cable to mine and attach the other end to my belt loop. Many people attach lanyards to theirs.

I agree with the mod. But I believe we are in the vast minority. I also got frustrated with the fact that the sloted/phillips screwdriver on the can opener was so limited in its application (due to the can opener getting in the way) that I took a cutting wheel and my dremmel and reshaped it. I removed most of the can opener shape leaving myself with what I now refer to as my secret weapon. I get in the backs of computers and equipment racks so easily now.

Does anyone know where at victorinox I should send a suggestion to make a two layer SAK with can opener replaced by the phillips from the Explorer or Spartan lite? and with the bottle opener replaced by a slotted screwdriver with a head a little less wide than the bottle opener?? I'd call it the engineer's model.

OkBookGuy,

You can check out Scientist, a discontinued model. It's 2 layer with long philips driver (the true philips). I myself use Spartan Lite, 3 layers and it's perfect for me, I need the LED from time to time.

If engineering with drivers is desired, why not Cybertool? They come with several model (some are thicker) I believe, but none is 2 layer though ..

I'd really love to find a Scientist. That isn't exactly what I had in mind but would certainly work. But as you say they're discontinued.

There was another engineer at work carrying the cybertool (7 layer version) and it was just too big for EDC. The original Cybertool is only 3 layers but is still longer (91mm) and thicker than I want for my "Engineer" model. Besides one whole layer is taken up with the separate bottle opener and can opener which I regard as completely silly and way outdated for urban EDC. The "combo" tool would certainly suffice.

Question: Does anyone know how much smaller/narrower the screwdriver tip of the combo tool is than the tip of the traditional bottle opener?

If 91mm is too long for you .. then Scientist (also 91mm) will not do. It's discontinued, but sometime it just popped up here and there.

Myself using Spartan Lite, 91mm 3 layers and am happy, cause it has the philips and two flat screwdriver on top of the other tools.

If you need to further explore, why not joining SOSAK community (www.sosakonline.com)?

Not crazy about the keyrings either, but I don't get that drastic. I just replace the stock large one with a little ring from a Classic. That way it's a bit less noticeable but still there if/when I want to clip it to my keys or a lanyard for some reason.

took the key ring attachment off the huntsman lite and classic this weekend... much nicer now. IMO

i never did have any use for them, so off they come! :)

i know what you say about the screw driver thing, i like the size of my wenger handyman best, but the philips driver (only one) comes out in the middle of one side and makes "T" handled driver. ok for most uses, but for tight spaces... useless. the vic huntsman lite has a philips that opens at one end and makes a straight out driver, which you can use straight open or in an "L" pattern... very useful for my purposes.

wouldn't it be killer if we could go to vic and say what we want and have it build for us???? i bet that would cost a pretty penny though :(

Not to be contrary, but I want a split ring/lanyard/fob attachment hole on my knives, multitools, and flashlights. I tie lanyards or fobs to many of them. On others, I install larger split rings so I can hang the tool or knife from a carabiner.

The best designed lanyard/split ring holes are unobtrusive. I can see how the protruding attachment point on some SAKs can get in the way if you carry it in a pocket.

Well there's all these mods being done by those guys on SOSAK online and they're taking SAKs apart and mixing & matching parts. We need to find out what tools and what size rivets they use to take them apart and reassemble them.

Can anyone tell me what size rivets are used to hold the SAK together and what tools you use?
