Hello all,
I've been lurking around on these forums for quite a while now, but am just now making my first post. There's a wealth of information on these forums, and this is the first time I haven't been able to find a thread that really addressed my question. I got a few ideas from the "anyone carry a multitool everyday?" thread just below this, but still have some things I haven't quite been able to work out.
I've been wanting to add a multi-tool to my EDC lineup for a while now, but pocket space is at a bit of a premium for me. The only pocket that really has any space is my left back pocket. I've tried carrying a SAK in that pocket but I end up both sitting on it and losing it. I carry a single-bladed locking knife, and a Vic Classic on my keyring, so basically what I'm looking for is a good screwdriver (prefer flat and Phillips) can opener and a small blade. I've had a few situations where having pliers would have been nice, but a Leatherman-type tool is not a must. Extras like a reamer or saw would be nice so long as they don't add too much bulk.
I've pretty much narrowed it down to two options:
1: A slim, minimal Leatherman-style multitool. It would have to have a clip so I could keep it clipped vertically in the pocket. The Leatherman Kick seems slim enough, and doesn't load up with functions I won't be using everyday. The Sideclip also looks like a nice option, but they've been discontinued for so long I haven't had any luck finding one. The SwissTools also have pocket clips, but they all seem pretty fat in comparison to the Leathermans.
2: A SAK in some sort of clip-on pouch. Again, I'd be looking for slim, so I could carry in the same way as I was thinking with the Leatherman. I'm thinking here of something along the lines of the pouches offered by William Henry, just in a size that will accomodate a SAK and not add much bulk. As for the tool, I was thinking like something along the lines of the Alox Soldier or Farmer--two or three layers, very thin overall.
What do you guys think of these ideas? I'm open to suggestions as to what tools/cases you think might fit the bill as well as any different ideas on how I might carry an extra tool around.
Thanks for any input offered,
Kevin
