A just received a SAK as a gift. It didn't have any packaging so I'm not entirely sure of the model, but I think it's a Huntsman or a Forester. On the bottom side it has a tool that is a long, straight shaft with a hook on the end. I have tried to figure out just what the heck it's supposed to do? Can someone please educate me on the mysterious hook?

Much thanks!

I know what you talking about. I think it is related to sewing, not sure though. Could also have several other random utility uses probably.

I had the exact same experience with a SAK Huntsman I got years back. I believe it is called a parcel hook. If you have a package wrapped with string you can use the hook to carry the package w/o having the string bite into your fingers. I have also read on this forum that people have found imaginative uses for this hook like tightening lacesand lifting pots off of a campfirefire. I hope that helps.

The hook can be used for many things according to Victorinox. They call it a multi-purpose hook sometimes. I have also seen it labeled as a fish hook disgorger. You can use it to hang your blade to dry if it gets wet.:D

i've heard people mention carrying paint cans and hay bales

or grabbing string or wire in places your fingers won't reach

i've used it a bit, but not all that much

The hoock is actually quite useful on any rope/wire that you would like to pull/tighten/carry without having it cut into your fingers. Which is in line with the official "parcel carrier" designation. Also, the hoock on my SwissBianco Yeoman has a file/match strike on the back!

What ufox9al said... Apparently, Europeans (or at least Swiss) wrap stuff up in string (rather than tape) regularly...

Also if your SAK is a plus model with the ball point pen, you can close the hook on the pen shaft and it turns the SAK into a good handle for the pen. It sure beats trying to write with only the tiny pen!

But I think the real use of the hook is for escaping from burning buildings by gliding down a wire. :D

The fish hook disgorger is a different tool, located on the tip of the fish scaler/ruler implement. I have never disgorged a hook with it, but did use the scaler once for its intended purpose. Terrible, any knife blade does better, but best is to use a fixed blade if you don't want to spend way too much time cleaning the mung out of every possible nook and cranny on your SAK.

Periodically, I give my Swisschamp a thorough soak in WD 40 and hang it up by the hook to think about things.

My favorite use. I keep waiting for the opportunity and hope that if it comes, I will have not grown too infirm to exploit it. :D

I mainly use it to hook the wire handle of my cooking pots when I camp. The handles get hot as hell, but I lift them right off the fire with my SAK hook.

I've also used it to pull wire tight so the wire didn't cut into my fingers. I've used it to reach through a hole and pull cord through, like a fish.

this is a great example of how SAK implements can be used-creativley and ad hoc

regardless of the 'official' explananation-

i use mine to tighten bootlaces on my rather stiff leather mountainteering boots

-i have also used it to pull out loops of things which i cant get a good purchase on with my fingers-and the hook can also be used to prize away something in which you can get the full angle of the knife into-

the round part can also be used as a burnisher

The hook is also great for pulling buttons through buttonholes. I use it to do up the button on my shirt sleeve cuffs (the sleeve cuffs are kinda tight and hard to button).
Yeah i know i could button them before i put the shirt on but whats the fun in that?
lol.

tholiver The hook on the Vic Compact also has a very useful nailfile on its spine!

My Vic SAK Compact has the nailfile but my Supertinker and Fieldmaster do not!! Don't forget the SAK hook replaces the need for a "sky hook".:D

I use the hook to twist wire or string together as well... and also for pulling those easy-open tabs from canned food or drink. =)

While I don't think many of us carry packages bound with twine regularly, I've used it when being dragged to the mall. Those bags with the plastic or cord handles really hurt after a while, and the hook helps.

While I hope I'm never trapped in a burning building, I've gotta say sliding down a wire to safety would be a blast!

Thanks for the various replies. I'm going to have to try a few of these over the Christmas holiday.

some knives have a hook for bird hunters. the hook is used to gut a bird in the field without having to open the bird. insert, twist and pull :D
