SAK question...

That would be great... you could even have two different locking blades, maybe one serated and the other plain.
You could use both tools at the same time, let say the screw driver on one and the pliers on the other... pretty common need.
They could even sell each of the knives individually if the tools were selected/matched correctly.
This is a very cool idea... so how do we get it to the manufacturer?

maybe Pizzini would know, he is a SAK dealer.

How about a name for this combo?

Victorinox Side by Side?

I like the idea of having the pliers and screw driver seperate-good one.

hi
i´m not sure how do you mean that.
one knife only with the cutting blades (blade, scissors, saws) and a second knife without cutting blades only with tools (screwdrivers, pliers,..) ?
but the big idea of the sak´s is that all is in one.
sure, the XL is too big - it´s actualy made for collecting not realy for carrying.

at the swiss tool plus you have a plain and a serrated locking blade and you can use the screwdrivers (bit at bitholder) and the pliers at the same time.

tell me how you would like take the tools apart (which tools in the one and which in the other) and i will ask victorinox.

If you're interested in something like a side-by-side design take a look at the Spyderco Spyderench. It isn't exactly what you've been talking about, but it is an interesting take on the same idea.

Take apart tools are available already for us bicyclists, such as the Topeak Alien.

Take the following list and split them into two knives...

First knife...
large lock blade (std)
small blade (std)
belt cutter
scissors
large phillips screwdriver (from end)
screwdriver/can opener/wire stripper
wood saw
shackle opener with marlin spike
reamer (middle)
hook (middle)
tweezers
toothpick

Second knife...
large fully serated blade (locking)
gutting blade
screw driver/cap lifter
multipurpose pliers/wire cutters
corkscrew (middle)
punch (middle)
fine screwdriver (flat,from end)
mini screwdriver (phillips, from end)
metal file
metal saw
pen
LED (white)

key ring on both

Sell as individual knives or as "Duo" pair with double sheath.

What do you think?

on the homefront. I couldn't get back to the thread any faster!

Prybar-thanks :) for picking up the slack! Good job on the layout you have come up with. Looks OK to me. Lotsa blades :D

I would like to see two small DMT diamond hones added:

One flat on the knife with the serrated main blade
One tapered on the knife with the plain edged main blade

Each knife could sharpen the other. As to other tools variations, one should have the multi-tip options of the Cyber tool (I think that is the one with the torx tips etc.).

I realize there are 'Sydie Wrenches' (I never cared for that one it just looks ugly to me), multi-tools galore-even a Swiss tool I believe, but I think it would be cool to have two basic 'knives' that would compliment each other like suggested above. Yes, I can carry my SOG powerlock and a SAK, but why not just carry two SAKs?

I often pair up a knife and a multi-tool in an old .45 cal military surplus magazine pouch. It isn't too ackward and a similar design could be used to carry the Side by Side. Of course, depending on your needs of the day you may only desire to carry one.

anyway....just an idea or two....

What I would like is a Swisschamp with locking blades. It would be even better if all of the tools locked but just the blades would be better than now. If there is one flaw with the Victorinox line it's the lack of a locking knife in the smaller sizes. I've tried the Wenger knives but they just don't hold up as well.

Another option would be a smaller version of the SwissTool. I love those but they're just too heavy to carry everday. A shorter length for the tools like the Leatherman Juice models would be great.

Pizzini.at if you get a chance please ask Victorinox if they have anything like these two in the works.

I'm glad to see you included the side view... they never show you that in the sales pics. When a knife is wider than it is deep it's no longer comfortable to hold or use. I for one didn't equate the number of tools to the thickness of the knife until I got my Work Champ. It is just on the edge of being to thick to be useful.
The XL is way beyond...

I feel this way also. This was a problem with my SwissChamp (not even the XLT). I liked the arrangement of tools though.
Now I have a Ranger, which is just about right.:)
(Someday I might even go for a Craftsman.)

Well, I am an avid Vic SAK owner/user. I have had my Swisschamp for over 8 years now and it never leaves my side. The thicker a SAK is the better for a real SAK enthusiast. My next SAK will be the XLT Swisschamp with all the tools.

If this is too thick for you, then a SAK is not the right tool for you. Try a Leatherman or something similar. Incidentally, I also have a Leatherman Supertool in my emergency/survival pouch mainly for the pliers. It is also a superb quality tool.

A smaller swisstool will come this fall.
For the standard size (91mm)with lock blade and the side by side I have to ask.

I've always had a love/hate relationship with my SAK's... the tools are very well made but sometimes poorly placed...

Like putting a phillips driver in the center of the back (like a cork screw) this just isn't a natural position for use.

Also the non-locking main blade always seems to catch me off guard. I guess carrying other locking blades and then switching to a SAK can screw you up.

Mongrel- that's a great idea with the dimond hones... I also thought about a fire rod for using both knives to start camp fires. This really could be a good survival setup if done right.

Another thought I had... the tool list on Knife #1 reminds me of one of their standard locking knives... maybe take that knife and design a "companion" to expand it's use... adding the items we talked about... Fire rod, dimond hone, etc...

just a thought...

I have to disagree. One of the best things about the SAK approach to multi-tools is that there's a version to suit almost anyone's tastes. I like the kitchen-sink approach myself, and carry a SwissChamp XLT, but there are others models that are perfect for minimalists and for everything in between.

Different people have different needs, but they can all enjoy SAKs. :)
