SAK scale fell off

One of the scales of my Victorinox Bantam fell off. Is this a frequent problem with SAKs? It is only about 6 months old and I never abused it. If I glue it back on with epoxy or something will it stay on? I really like the knife but it is kind of ugly missing a scale.

Thanks

Terry

Stick it back on with some quick dry 2 ton epoxy. It will be fine after that.

Send it back to the company for service. In your letter, mention that "the other guys on your internet knife collecting list" mentioned that the company would be happy to service the knife. They're sure to fix the knife for you rather than risk having you blab to all your co-knife knuts here on the net that you got bad service from Victorinox. Even without that bit of pre-emptive positioning, however, I reckon Vic will just go ahead and fix/replace the knife for you.
Let us know what happens.

I think a good epoxy is the solution. Or the factory. One is bound to be quicker and just as good, if not better.

I think it must be pretty rare. In fact, I've abused some of my SAKs so much, I've always been surprised that some of the scales HAVEN'T fallen off. Never lost a scale. I'm sure they do fall off from time to time but they must be doing something right. BTW, I would send it to the factory. From what I've heard from others, they will likely inspect it and correct other problems--if any--than you might have.

I've retared a couple of SAK's over the years. Mostly for cosmetic reasons and the fact that they are not that expensive to have a bright new one.

The odd scale has come off on old ones but thats usually because they had years of work and a real bashing. A good glue works fine. SAK's build strength compliments the slip lock design, so are not intended to be bullet proof. They are still the best for their size and intended use.

If the scale came off early in its life, send it back and I would be suprised if they didn't send you a new one.

I had a Vic. SAK that started to get gunky inside so I put it in a small pan of water with a tablespoon of dishwashing compound, you know, the caustic stuff that works in hot water. I boiled my knife. The red scales buckled and turned a sort of flat orange/red. I thought I'd ruined it, but NO! When it cooled, the scales returned to normal shape, as before, and a little armorall and the color returned. I gave it away to a guy who wouldn't get one for himself but needed it, and I bought a new one!

The Bantam (one blade, bottle opener/screwdriver, toothpick & tweezers) seems to be a "runt." I bought one and it had a loose scale - it buckles in the middle too. Changed it for another and now the new one seems loose. None of my other SAKs have ever been a problem. Return it to Victorinox - they'll do you up. But, since it's only about $12-$15, make sure the postage is worth it.

Thanks for the responses. I glued it back on with superglue a couple days ago and so far it's OK.

I didn't think it'd be worth it to buy epoxy or pay postage to send it back to the company (it is only a ten dollar knife). If a scale falls off again I think I'll just throw it away and buy a Wenger.
