Alrighty guys, SAK vs. slip-joints and other traditional knives! Why would/do you carry your particular one? How do they compare in your opinion? Which is better for the outdoor community?

I live in a city. SAK is amazing for me and does many things a traditional couldn't. I carry a super tinker most days. I've used the can opener, the screw drivers get used, the bottle opener opens bottle several days a week and doubles as a light pry bar. The punch/awl sees use every so often, the hook gets ignored most of the time. The scissors get used from time to time. Both knives of course get used often. I think a lot of that wouldn't be as useful in the outdoors. A SAK with 2 blades and a saw would be good, and the farmer is awesome outdoors, but if you are basically just carving up wood I think a stockman/whittler in carbon steel may be better for you.

"SAK vs. Traditional!"

"Traditional vs Tactical EDC?"

"Solid Traditional?"

Looks like you've got the word 'traditional' on the brain.

SAK... They provide great utility, are relatively inexpensive (for their mainstream models), and are about as people-friendly of a knife as you can get.

Sak and outdoor community? That answers easy the farmer is tough to beat.

Swiss army knives are simply stainless Camper patterns IMO. though I am more of a leatherman kind of guy.

I have a small legit wenger sak from my Gpa and I opened a box with that instead of my razor blade or 350. Felt great and worked great.

I carry a SAK and another knife every day. The SAK acts more as a multi-tool, while my other knife is a more straight forward EDC knife (3-4" blade, usually thicker stock, always locking). Versatility is key.

I carry both almost every day (sometimes a Leatherman instead of the SAK), so I couldn't say which I think is better. It's hard to compare multitools and dedicated knives, though. Its like comparing a Leatherman to a pair of pliers.

Sak is def growing on me! I'm carrying a little one from my gpa with 9 tools
In it. It's awesome for cutting nails(super awesome scissors), opening
Boxes with
The penknife.

The SAK, of course.

I have a lot of knives but if I am walking out the door and can only take one knife with me under penalty of death, it would be a SAK every time.

Definitely a SAK for the outdoors. In fact. I'd be so peeved if anything happened to my Outrider. Policy dictates I can't have the same knife twice and I don't know how to improve upon the Outrider for my needs................That said, the Sowbelly pattern is something my hand really appreciates. And the cutting power of the Lambsfoot or Wharnie is something I really like too. I find it hard to top something that's essentially a bigger prettier Stanley knife.

For outdoors, go with SAK or multitool. I usually carry at least one other knife as well. Fixing a pack, tent, or bike, pulling splinters, opening that microbrew that does not have a twist off bottlecap, etc. are much easier and often necessary. Funny thing, I consider the SAK corkscrew to be my number one tool. I've never been anywhere that nobody else had a knife, but there have been many times when I was the only person on the scene who could open the wine!

A SAK is a Traditional. There was a thread in the Tradional forum not long ago about it, and most all agreed on that.

I carry an Alox Cadet often, and also carry different types of traditional knives along with modern designs.

If only Case knives made models similar to Victorinox... Can you imagine the beautiful scales of a Case knife with the utility and versatility of a Victorinox? I'd be so broke so fast. Maybe one day these companies will get it...

SAK vs. slip-joints and other traditional knives.

I used to carry traditional slipjoints all the time. Started carrying a SAK (Tinker) and really liked that. I switched to a SAK Soldier for a while. Now I carry the SAK Adventurer model which I really like overall. I want to start carrying a traditional (no tools) in the near future, I just have not decided on which one. Thinking pretty seriously about the GEC #42 which is about the same size as the Adventurer. I like the big two-layer SAKs and suspect I will be very comfortable with the middle large size GEC. It certainly has more class than a SAK. But I don't know if I am willing to use it the way I use my SAK (pretty hard use).
