I was deciding which knife to put in my pocket last night, and that got me thinking about the particular strengths of some the various Spydies I own, and some others I don't own yet. Things like flat ground blades and carbon fiber scales and nested linerlocks. Which started me fantasizing about my ideal Spyderco knife.

So here's my question: if Sal Glesser offered to magically create (thereby avoiding any real world engineering considerations) a special version of any Spyderco knife (past or present) for you, what would it be?

I think mine would be a 2.49" (I work in a federal facility), carbon fiber, plain-edge Military.

If I start dreaming about Sal, I'll quit reading the forums.

1. Spyderco "Traditional Series": trappers, barlows, jack knives, etc. with VG-10 or 440V steel and Spyderco quality.

2. Drop point hunter like a Buck Vanguard but with better steel and other Spyderco attributes.

I know this is branching out, Sal, but how much more can you do with modern folders? You lead the folder revolution; now go back and show everybody how to do the traditional stuff too.

I'm looking for the perfect Xmas gift knife for my dad and brother-in-law. Of course I would have to buy one for myself too.

It would be very similar in size and shape to the Gerber LST. Zytel handle of course, but with much improved fit and finish over the Gerber. Flat ground, drop-point blade with a fine tip for splinter picking and fingernail cleaning, kinda like the Delica's tip. No opening hole. No clip.

Why this knife and not the Gerber? Steel! Make it out of 440V or some other wondersteel. Make it sharp. Make it a knife that you can give to non-knifeknuts, without having to settle for some Wal-Mart bargain bin crap. A knife that we knuts can appreciate, but that doesn't scare the sheeple.

For a slightly upgraded model, I would like to see it constructed like the micarta Calypso Jr.

I remember seeing something similar to this in the Moki or Seki lines, but it still had some things I didn't like about it. Now that I think about it, it's kinda like a smaller Jess Horn without the hole or clip.

Yea, if Sal invades my REM sleep, I am defintely swearing off the forums for good.

Simple man to please. Titanium scaled Police with a 50/50 plain/serrated CPV 440 blade.

I'm with Frank and ChrisJohn. The concept of Sal as the sleep fairy is enough to drive me off the internet period. However, as a Genie (What kind of Bottle? TUF_GLIDE of course!) maybe, just maybe, I'd ask for 3,744 SpydeWrenches. One for each of us don't ya know!

Sleep well, Chris

Hey!! Thanks a lot Chris!

Left handed Starmate and/or Military for me please!

Or...maybe another fixed blade. Collaberation with Loveless maybe. Hmmm...

I'm really easy to please. All I want is a
Titanium handled Calypso (senior) with its standard VG-10 plain edge.

Oh yeah, that would be satisfaction.

(A titanium, flat ground, jr would be nice too.)

I had a different dream......but then I saw Corduroy's dream. Corduroy, is it OK if I share yours?

Make the Moran in A2, D2, 01, or BG42 in addition to VG10.

Better yet, I'd like plain edge Mariner.

Oh yeah, all of the above!

I think I'd substitute an earth-tone color on the large native, and the CF Civilian should not have a lock-back. And could the ti-handled Calypso be anodyzed a light blue?

Oh, I just remembered! I want something like the 'R', but with a circle, or oval, theme. The Almite scales should be available in two colors; plum purple and chocolate brown. I guess the blade should be VG-10, if that's feasible with the cut-outs. To keep the SKUs down, one color could be PlainEdge, and the other SpyderEdge. I'll take one of each, obviously.

I dreamt that the Chinese Folder was in tne shops before Christmas. Can't think of anything I'd rather get in my stocking. Oh, and it was in CPM440V steel but that is probably too much to ask (VG10 would be nice though

Don't worry that the world might end tomorrow....in Australia it's tomorrow already.

1. Drop point Moran.
2. Calypso Jr. with the spine and thump hole "cusp" rounded rather than sharp.
3. Plain edged Ladybug.
4. A sharpener 4-1/2" x 1/2" x 3/16" (which would fit perfectly in a Benchmade AFO belt pouch next to a Victorinox SwissTool).
5. Steel Dragonfly with the clip mounted closer to the end of the handle.

Stop when you get to bone.

This is easy... A Police model, 50/50 edge in blue G-10 and a Ladybug II with rescue-orange handle!

Ben Lavine

  • Bob Lum tanto in 5/32" 440V, with dual steel liners and bead blasted green canvas micarta scales, with a bit of a palm swell. A tanto-pointed stable-mate to the Military and Starmate...
  • Stretched cricket, 2-7/8" blade, with polished G10 scales and a pronounced palm swell (ala Mini Task), and a full steel backspacer. A polished river-rock that can live in the palm of your hand while sorting through papers, etc., with the blade appearing when needed with little conscious effort...
  • Dark purple FRN Endura with 70/30 blade (i.e. 3/4 inch of tip plain, rest serrated). Just for fun...
...although the blue-ano'ed Ti-handled Calypso Jr, and the earth-tone G10 handled large Native both sound pretty darn nice, too
