can anyone help me w/ a small problem?

my brand new aqua salt is out of the box dull as butter-

-upon very and i do mean very light burnishing w/ a fine dmt diamond stone--and a follow up strop w leather the knife makes hair fly--but only very briefly..then same old problem.

I chose the plain version due to pre concieved fear about tooth fracture on the spydie edge...Ive also been considering the rock salt as a future aquirement but if it dulls just as fast..maybe not...I dont have access to my spyderco triangle right now..

the problem appeared to be a light burr left on manufacture...Is there a problem w/the knife steel???or well..

I leave this one to you o great one:cool:

I heard that H1 tends to retain edge better and better as you move into the steel by sharpening it.

There has got to be something wrong with it, I don't think that spyderco would sell something that dull.

It may still be a burr. If it isn't, then it sounds like something is wrong with the heat treat. H1 won't win any edge-holding contests, but it should not get dull that easily. Also, don't worry about the serrations chipping and get a Rock Salt. :)

thanx guys--im not new to spyderco but the hi is another ball o wax altogether--I was really shocked that this steel was so easy to burnish w/just plain old leather--no rouge or polish of any kind was needed.

Ive used this bevel polish method for about 20 yrs now and its worked like a charm on every steel ive attempted it on except like cpm series stuff form spydie...

the rock salt gets hello reviews and i really want it..but im lookin for a all around use camp knife that wont rust...maybe it doesnt exist afterall....:confused:

I find it strange it was so dull and it is so easily sharpened. I know h1 hardens with use. My salt1 has become somewhat troublesome to sharpen, bit holds an edge very long, close to 154cm or vg10, but it was never THAT easy to sharpen. Just keep on using it is my recommendation. I heard of some people would cut through boxes of cardboard over and over so the friction would heat up the edge and then sharpen it and do the process over and over for a while and apparently it increased the edge holding capability. Never tried it don't know if it works, but maybe worth a try.

I'm done.

snakedad,
We would prefer, if you are able, that you send the knife back in to us. It's something we'll want to take a look at. Please send it to the address below, include all of your contact information and reference this thread, please provide the same information that you posted. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

Dont get me wrong--everything else about the aqua salt is almost perfect
in fact a larger one would be perfect

The reason I bought the aqua was because I was having so much touble getting the rock salt.

I dont relish having to work harden a blade. If thats the nature of the beast; its something ill learn to live with

rock salt sure is allota coin to have to beat to death on a tree in order to sharpen it

lve gotta OLD CS trailmaster thats been WWWOOORRRKKKK hardened until its almost crystalline when u sharpen it. I recently sent it to the factory for rehandling

I really want to be able to have faith in salt knives--theyre my new spyderco fetish--and the first spydies ive bought in years

keep em comin' guyz--maybe this is a new catchfire

Your Salt should hold a decent enough edge to compare well with AUS-4 out of the box. If it does not it may be from a bad batch, and you should give Spyderco a chance to fix it.

thx carrot--watch out for the bunnies--I hear they carry glox and spydie millies now???...

I feel a trip bak 2 golden comin on for this blade--Im a huge food ntwrk fan and when I saw AB carryin the salties--that did it. Any knife AB carries auto goes in ye old collection

I collect "vid knives"every since the police in "Hard Target" w/ Van damme.

Im gonna start a thread--who can list the most vid knives

Seens spydie; buck and sog carry most of that ilk now

I'd go with the suggestion to send it in.

The SE work hardens much faster with these. I guess the SE produces more friction and heat.

I have a Saver Salt which is fully serrated. I find that it is easy to sharpen, but it came sharp enought to shave arm hairs and I've keep it that way. I feel that it retains an edge better then my VG10 Rescue JR (Same knife, but with VG10 instead of H-1). I would send it back for sure.

I really dont understand how this happened---but im visisting friends in TN near SMKW--and the only ceramic I had w/o goin to the store is a Lansky dog bone 4 CS serrations.

I used the round side and done some bevel work on the aqua. Once again the blade came out hair flingin sharp--but this time on the paper test the edge lasted alot longer.:D

I am quite pleased. It would be alot easier to just return the knife 2 SMKW--I may still do that as opposed 2 payin ups 2 ship 2 Golden.

There are some sheath defects as well---but I have to say I still feel good about this knife.

And I still wanna see a rock salt plow thru tree limbs in person so its probably a sale ;);)

Thank you all so much for this happier corner of the BF universe....

You guyz are alot like mythbusters....You do all the crazy shizzy I wanna do...I just get to watch...save money and laugh along.:eek::thumbup:

Hi Snakedad,

Sorry for your frustration.

It's really hard to tell what may be wrong with a knife without our seeing it.
