Sal, perhaps a Byrd "Salt"?

I just read a post by a member of the Coast Guard stating his fondness for the G-10 Meadowlark he recently purchased. His comments got me thinking (uh oh), and after I thought back to the recent prototype photos of the Byrd Rescues, it occurred to me that perhaps a Byrd "Salt" might not be a bad idea. Of course, the concept wouldn't be identical to the Spyderco Salt series that I am such a fan of, but it would be similar. Basically, what I envision is starting with a FRN Meadowlark or Cara Cara, (in a bright colour) then using the most corrosion-resistant Chinese steel available for the liners, lock bar, and blade. Obviously, edge holding would be somewhat compromised and it would not be absolutely rust-proof, but the result should be a very serviceable corrosion-resistant knife. I know I'd buy a Meadowlark "Salt" in a heartbeat, and with so many fans of the Byrd line, I'm relatively sure there are others who would appreciate one too. Any thoughts?

Hi Padawan,

Nothing in China, at this time, that would work as a totally corrosion free model, which is what the Salt series offers. In a case like this, "close isn't good enough".

But thanx for the thought.

Are you familiar with the Spyderco forums? If so, head on over there and do a quick search for the Amsterdam Meet and you'll find some great photos taken by Mr. Blonde of the latest prototype models, including the Salt Rescues. From the looks of it, there will be a Meadowlark-sized version and a Cara Cara-sized version, both with FRN scales . Not sure what the ETA is for them, though.
