Sal - Spyderco: Wharncliff ideas...

Hi Sal, I just recently found your Rescue series knives and thought that could be a fantastic other-than-rescue-usage-knife if the blade were to come with a plain edge in a 'flat-grind'! What do you think?

The thought here was to save any additional costs, suchas handle design, etc. Only the blade would be designed or redesigned as the Rescue blade could be used; just grinding differently(the same cutouts could be used) changing the blade profile. This could dramatically aleviate most of the new model costs!......

PLEASE!!

Any others think the same way?! :D

A run of plain-edge Rescues were made once. Unfortunately they were a sales flop. I have two myself and think they're great - and they would be even better with a wharncliffe point.

Even better, IMO, would be a plain-edge Assist II.

That blade should be easily made with a plain edge!
After I read your note, I checked it out.......and ordered one! What a bonus!!
I ordered the Assist II with the combo edge....:D

Now Mr. Glesser...about a plain edge Assist II !!??.

How do we twist his arm Carlos?

I'm not Carlos but twisting his arm is easy:

Send Sal a check to cover a full run at wholesale price. He'll set it up for ya' ;)

How do I/We start a ground swell of interested folks, or find the interested folks to get the proper attention?

The "groundswell" route has been tried on a few occasions. Spyderco has made knives and according to Sal, they haven't sold as hoped. This means dead inventory filling the shelves.

I hate to be a party poop, but the economics of running a company of any size tend to limit opportunites for experimentation.

I used to think that "custom" knifemakers were the answer, but try getting a custom maker to make your design. If you can find one, save your ducats and design your own knife.

Since so many people, like myself, have become involved more recently, and am not familiar with previous models - like the c23 renegade that I would love to buy; maybe Spyderco could come and to advertise in this format what they have that might have not sold well previously, but could now as new people are entering the knifenut world......

Thanks for the put....

I think the days of forum special runs are gone. Maybe we could plead for a handful of Assist IIs to be saved from the serrations machine, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Best thing to do for a larger wharncliffe would be to build united support for a Vesuvius wharncliffe variation, or the larger Kiwi (which Spyderco has prototypesd). The Vesuvius variant might be the easiest sell.

Carlos, I believe that the Kopa is to be a larger version of the Kiwi.

This would be a larger Wharncliffe blade.

I recall from Spyderco's web forum a prototype was a the IWA show in Germany last time.

I recall Sal saying a combo of cocobolo and micarta handle. Sounded sexy to me.

Sounds good to me too. Did the Kopa have a clip?

Hey, get in line! :)

I'm still waiting for some form of the "large Native."

But first, there's the Spyderco Forum Native II to buy, when it comes out. That's one reason I didn't get the Forum Spyderhawk. Gotta save some dough for what I really want. I'd have a regular Native II now, but if I don't like the wire clip I'd rather spend the money on the Forum Native II. That way I'd have the "collectable." If I liked the clip, then it's on to the regular Native II for carry. (And they're very reasonably priced, too.)

So I'm still waiting to get the Forum Native II. Then the "large Native," if it ever comes out.

I bought two of the distributor run of olive/black Ti Delicas. I thought there was to be a similar distributor run of Enduras? Maybe I just imagined that? Can anyone tell me? :) Please? :D

Ya know if I were rich, I'd buy at least one of everything, and bunches of those I really like! :) And if it comes in colors, watch out for those huge wall displays!

I do like Wharncliffes, though. A PE Assist would be nice. Seems like not too much trouble to skip the serrations...

Safety Guy, Isn't it a Native III that will be the next Spyderco Forum knife? Blue or gray G-10 handle? I don't know all the details but this was my impression.

Blue FRN handle.

Would it not be possible to simply get a plain edge rescue and just grind the back away to the desired Wharncliff shape?

Should take less than ten minutes.

Slightly off topic...

... but all the Wharncliffe I need is in the Yojimbo.

*nudge nudge*

You mean like this?? :D It is not quite as pointy as I would like, but I can fix that.

tell us the story of the knife in the picture.

I did not know about the plain edge rescue either!!! Whenever I pulled up the rescue only offered with the serrations.

I traded another forumite for it a year or so back. He had a local knifemaker grind the back of the blade down to give it a functional point. The thumb grooves need to be cleaned up, but the blade works very well.

Another pic of the blade:

The plain edged Rescues were on clearance at Knifecenter.com for a while, but I am pretty sure they are sold out now.

If you start saving now hopefully you'll have enough saved up for a Yojimbo when it's released. The Yojimbo looks to be a perfect EDC wharncliffe from the pics and descriptions I've seen.
